Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA (MAY 25, 2010) - The Dash got its longest road trip of the season off to a good start on Tuesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Salem Red Sox at Lewis-Gale Field. The Winston offense produced just enough support for starter Terry Doyle, who picked up his first Carolina League win with six solid innings of work.
The game was a pitcher's duel throughout, with Doyle and Salem starter Caleb Clay (2-2) matching zeroes until the fifth inning. The Dash offense woke up when Jason Bour slammed Clay's first pitch of the frame to right-center field for a triple. It was the fourth triple of the season for Bour, who began the year with two career triples in three professional seasons.
Two batters later, Kyle Shelton laced a single to right to score Bour and give the Dash a 1-0 lead.
Winston (32-13) added another run in the seventh inning off new Salem pitcher William Latimer. Luis Sierra singled on a swinging bunt that rolled about ten feet up the first base line. Shelton sacrificed him to second and two batters later, Brandon Short smoked a double to left, scoring Sierra and putting the Dash ahead 2-0.
Doyle (1-1) was very good in his first six innings of work, keeping the Red Sox (26-19) off-balance with his array of pitches. He came back out for the seventh, but allowed a leadoff double to Alex Hassan and then was removed from the game. Kyle Bellamy came on and allowed a sacrifice bunt, and then an RBI single to Peter Hissey to cut the Dash lead to 2-1.
Winston-Salem got that run back in the ninth after Salem manager Kevin Boles made a questionable pitching move. He brought in Zach Hammes, a former Dodgers farmhand who has struggled with his control throughout his career and in his one other outing this season. After striking out the leadoff batter, Hammes walked four straight Dash players to force in a run and make it 3-1 Winston.
That run proved to be critical, as Gregory Infante allowed a run in the ninth, but struck out Oscar Tejeda with the tying run at third to end the game. Infante picked up his league-leading eighth save and preserved the win for Doyle, who allowed one run on three hits and three walks over six-plus innings.
Clay suffered the loss, despite also allowing only one run in six innings.
The win ballooned Winston-Salem's Southern Division lead to six games over Salem, the biggest margin all season. With the Tampa Bay Rays' loss, the Dash now owns the best record of any team in the major or minor leagues.
The Dash goes for the series victory on Wednesday night, when RHP Nevin Griffith (4-1, 2.56) looks to bounce back from his first loss of the season against Red Sox righty Alex White (2-1, 3.89). First pitch is scheduled at 7:05 p.m. Fans can tune into the webcast at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on June 3 for a four-game series against the Kinston Indians.
