Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Birds Blink First: Charlie Leesman out-dueled J.J. Hoover and Jordan Cheatham had an RBI single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie as the Dash shut out the Pelicans 2-0 on Tuesday night. It was the Dash's second shutout win of the season and the team improved to 5-0 against Myrtle Beach in 2010. Winston has now won four in a row and nine of its last ten games. The Pelicans have lost their last five contests. The Dash owns the third-best record in major or minor league baseball, half a game behind Tampa Bay and low-A Lake County (both 28-11).

Ready for two: Both Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach will play their first doubleheader of the season today. It will be a split, day-night doubleheader, something of a rarity in minor league baseball. Game one is the regularly scheduled noon game. The second game starts at 7 p.m. and is a make up of Monday night's rainout.

Leesy Peasy Lemon Squeezy: Charlie Leesman had his best start of the season last night, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball, scattering six hits, walking none, and striking out two. He picked up his fifth win of the season, tying Kinston's T.J. McFarland and the recently promoted Justin Edwards for the Carolina League lead. It was the third time in Leesman's career that he had pitched at least seven shutout innings in a professional game and his first since 8/9/2009 against Greensboro.

NC-17: With a 2 for 4 game, 3B Jon Gilmore was the only Dash player with more than one hit last night. He extended his hitting streak to 17 games with his pair of singles. Gilmore had a 15-gamer end on 4/29, the day before he started his current streak. He had picked up at least one hit in 32 of his last 33 games. He is hitting .338 (27-80) during this streak, versus .446 during the 15-game streak. Gilmore's streak is the longest current streak professional affiliated baseball.

Out-hit, Outplay, Outlast: Last night Myrtle Beach out-hit the Dash seven to six, marking the third time in the last five games that the team has had fewer hits in a game than its opposition. Winston has not posted more hits than the opposing team since last Wednesday's 12-8 victory at Potomac. Despite the relative lack of hits, the Dash has still managed to post a 4-1 record in the last five games.

Downright Offensive: Despite only mustering two runs and six hits on Tuesday night, Winston-Salem still leads both the Carolina League and the rest of professional affiliated baseball in batting average and runs scored this season. The Dash's .315 clip is the best batting average of any professional affiliated team. Only three other teams have a batting average over .290 and no other team is higher than .306. The Dash's average is an absurd 43 points higher than any other Carolina League team (Lynchburg is hitting .272). Winston has five players in the top ten in the league in batting average: Brandon Short (1st, .388), Jon Gilmore (3rd, .355), Ozzie Lewis (5th, .341), Justin Greene (9th, .328) and Drew Garcia (10th, .323). The team's 249 runs are the most of any team, majors or minors. AAA Durham is second with 232 runs.

Tony Stark Specials: Only three players in the Carolina League have played every game and two of them are on the Dash. Justin Greene and Brandon Short have been Winston-Salem's iron men, playing in all 38 games this season. Wilmington's Eric Hosmer has also played every game in 2010.

Today's Game One Opposing Starter: RHP Randall Delgado (0-0, 0.90) makes his ninth start of the season and his second against Winston-Salem. He pitched well but took the loss against the Dash on 4/19, allowing three runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. Just 20 years old, Delgado is the second-youngest player on the Pelicans roster and entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the seventh-best prospect in the Atlanta system. The Panamanian spent 2009 in Rome, going 5-10 with a 4.35 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 124 innings. Over his last nine starts, Delgado went 4-2 with a 2.63 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 48 innings. He has struck out better than a batter per inning in each of his three minor league seasons. His fastball sits in the low-90s and can reach 96, according to Baseball America. Delgado also features a curveball and a changeup in his arsenal.

Today's Game Two Opposing Starter: RHP Julio Teheran (0-0, 0.00) makes is Advanced-A debut in the second game of today's doubleheader. He entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the 3rd best prospect and the best pitching prospect in the Atlanta Braves minor league system. His first seven starts in the South Atlantic League did nothing to disappoint. Teheran went 2-2 with a 1.14 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched. He allowed one earned run or fewer in six of his seven starts, and never gave up more than two runs in any outing. At 19 years old, he is the youngest player on the Pelicans roster and the youngest in the Carolina League. Teheran originally signed with Atlanta as a 16-year-old in 2007, signing for $850,000, the largest bonus ever given to a Colombian player and the largest bonus given to a pitcher on the international market that year. He is projected to be a top of the rotation major league starter with a mid-90s fastball, an excellent curveball, a good changeup, and outstanding mound presence. Last year with Danville, he went 2-1 with a 2.68 ERA in seven starts before earning a promotion to low-A Rome, where he went 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA.
