Frederick Keys News Release

Backed by some timely hitting, the Keys defeated the Potomac Nationals, 6-4, on Wednesday night. Frederick (25-15) has taken the first three from Potomac (17-23) in the four-game set and now has a four-game winning streak for the fourth time this season. RF Ronnie Welty and 1B Joe Mahoney both had homeruns in the Keys victory.

Frederick scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom half of the first. With one out and two on, Mahoney hit a single to centerfield that brought home LF Kyle Hudson from second. The next batter up for the Keys was DH Jacob Julius. Julius drove a single to rightfield that brought home RF Ronnie Welty to give Frederick the two-run advantage.

Potomac scored two in the top of the third on C Derek Norris' first homerun of the season.

The tie game would be short lived.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Ronnie Welty took the A.J. Morris delivery deep over the leftfield fence for his eighth home run of the season. Later in the inning, SS Greg Miclat singled home Mahoney to give Frederick a 4-2 lead.

Following four scoreless innings, Potomac tied the game up again and once again it was thanks to the long ball. With one out and Derek Norris on first, Michael Burgess hit an opposite field homerun off Raul Rivero.

Just a night after the Keys scored three runs in the seventh inning to pick up a win, Frederick had more late-innings heroics up their sleeves.

Following a Ronnie Welty walk, Joe Mahoney hit a towering blast off, Frederick native, Dan Leatherman. Mahoney's fifth homerun of the season and first at Harry Grove Stadium gave the Keys a two-run lead they would not relinquish.

Jose Diaz pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning en route to his third save of the season.

With the win, Frederick now has an eight-game lead in the Northern Division with 30 games left in the first half of the season.

The Keys will go for their first sweep of the season Thursday morning against the Nationals. RHP Oliver Drake (0-0, 4.15) will make his start for the Keys since April 9th and he will be opposed by RHP Patrick Lehman (1-1, 4.50) of Potomac. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. on History Day at Harry Grove Stadium. For tickets call 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
