Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 19, 2010) - Randall Delgado stifled the Dash's bats over seven shutout innings as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans blanked Winston-Salem 5-0 in the first game of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark. The loss snapped the Dash's four-game winning streak and marked the first time Winston has lost to Myrtle Beach this season.
The Pelicans (12-27) got to Dash starter Terry Doyle for a pair of runs in the first inning. Doyle (0-1), making his Advanced-A debut, gave up singles to Cole Miles and Amadeo Zazueta to start the game. An Ozzie Lewis error on Zazueta's single allowed both runners to advance to scoring position with no one out. Mike Daniel brought home Miles with a groundout to second to score Myrtle's first run. Gerry Rodriguez' hard single through the left side of the drawn-in infield scored Zazueta to give the birds a 2-0 lead.
Winston-Salem (27-12) saw its deficit double in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Gerardo Avila to push the Pelicans ahead 4-0.
Myrtle Beach added another run in the eighth on Luis Sumoza's RBI single to account for the final score.
Delgado (2-3) entered the game as one of the best pitchers in the Carolina League, and he certainly lived up to that billing. The Panamanian went seven innings of three-hit shutout baseball, striking out five and walking just one.
The Dash put a man in scoring position just twice all game and never got a man past second base. Jon Gilmore went 0 for 4, ending his hitting streak at 17 games.
The game marked the second time Winston-Salem has been shut out this season. The Dash also lost 5-0 in the second game of the season at Kinston on April 9. Myrtle Beach evened the four-game series at a game apiece, avenging its 2-0 shutout loss on Tuesday night.
The Dash and Pelicans play game two of the split doubleheader on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. RHP Dylan Axelrod (2-1, 2.60) opposes RHP Julio Teheran in his Advanced-A debut. Fans with tickets to Monday night's game may use them for Wednesday's 7 p.m. game. The game will be broadcast on www.wsdash.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
