Winston-Salem Dash News Release
ZEBULON, NC (APRIL 7, 2012) - A four-run fourth inning propelled Winston-Salem to its first win of 2012, 7-2 over the Carolina Mudcats Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
The Dash (1-1) led 2-1 entering the fourth inning when, with the bases loaded and one down, Michael Earley laced a two-run double off the wall in left-center. Jake Oester followed suit with a two-run single to center to complete the Dash's first multi-run frame of the season.
For the second straight night, the Dash jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Catcher Mike Blanke bombed a solo home run, Winston-Salem's first homer of the season, over the left field fence in the second inning.
One inning later, Winston tallied an unearned run. Earley reached second base on a fielding error and came around to score on Carlos Sanchez's double down the right field line.
The Dash finished their scoring in the ninth inning on a wild pitch. All nine starters reached base at least once, and five different Winston-Salem swingers scored a run.
Winston-Salem starter Andre Rienzo (1-0) befuddled the Mudcats (1-1) during his five-inning outing. Rienzo's only blemish came in the third on a Giovanni Urshela sacrifice fly. He finished with five strikeouts and only two hits allowed. The Brazil native retired the final nine batters he faced.
Out of the bullpen, Leroy Hunt posted a pair of scoreless frames. He stranded runners at second and third in the seventh after retiring the Mudcats in order in the sixth.
Chris Bassitt allowed a run in the eighth, but he induced an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded to maintain the Dash advantage. In the ninth, Bassitt stranded a pair of Mudcats to nail down the victory.
Carolina starter Mike Rayl (0-1) surrendered six runs, five of which were earned, in four innings of work. The Mudcats' bullpen only allowed one run over five frames.
Winston-Salem and Carolina conclude this season-opening three-game set with a rubber match Sunday afternoon at 2 from Five County Stadium. Dash southpaw Spencer Arroyo takes to the mound against right-hander Michael Goodnight in both hurlers' first outing of the season. Pre-game coverage on wsdash.com begins at 1:45.
The Dash open up their home schedule Friday night against Carolina. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit wsdash.com.
