Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game Notes

April 7, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

HOMER HISTORY

Tomas Telis hit two homeruns last night, tying the team record for most homeruns hit in a single game. He's the 50th Pelican all-time to hit multiple homeruns in one game. Six Pelicans hit two homers in a game in 2011, the last being Mike Olt against Lynchburg on August 25th.

Telis was helped by a homerun from Josh Richmond en rout to a 6-0 win. The difference is the largest Opening Day margin of victory for the Pelicans since the first game in team history, an 8-0 win Frederick in 1999.

...AND IT's HAPPENED BEFORE

TicketReturn.com Field is known as a pitcher's heaven, so the Pelicans three homerun game would seem initially like an oasis. But it doesn't take a lot of digging to find the last time it happened. Two of the last three regular season games at the park last year saw three homers fly (against Salem). The shots were hit by both teams. The last Pelican to launch two homers at the park was Olt on August 25th, 2011 against Lynchburg, just four games prior to Telis going yard twice last night.

IS THAT YOU KENNY POWERS?

The Pelicans struck out 13 Wilmington batters in last night's opener. The total is three off 2011's season high in a nine-inning game (16, also against Wilmington on Opening Day). The Pelicans recorded a strikeout in all but the sixth inning and each of the Birds four pitchers K'd at least one batter. Guelin Beltre was three times a strikeout victim, while Whit Merrifield, Brian Fletcher and Jake Kuebler went down twice.

YOUNG GUNS

The Opening Day roster for the Pelicans consists of 12 players under the age of 22. That total is already more or equal too six entire previous season in Pelicans history (2011, 2010, 2004, 2002, 2001, 2000). The Pelicans had seven players under 22 during the course of last season, the fewest in team history. The most came in 2009, when Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward highlighted a group of 20 young guns. Cody Buckel is the youngest player on this year's team at just 19 years of age. He's only the 11th teenager to don a Pelicans uniform, and the first since Arodys Vizcaino and Julio Teheran in 2010. Seven of the previous 10 teenagers to play on the Grand Strand went on to play in the Major Leagues.
