Blue Crew Bested in Tight Affair
April 7, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - Different night, same basic story for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. While the Blue Crew avoided the big inning from its opponent, it could not circumvent the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' pitching or prospect catcher Tomas Telis. Telis got the big hit for a second straight night as his run-scoring double in the sixth led the Pelicans (2-0) to a 2-1 defeat of the Blue Rocks (0-2) on Saturday.
Extra-base hits directly led to hosts' two tallies. In the opening frame, Jared Hoying tripled down the right-field line and later scored on a two-out comeback liner from Christian Villanueva for a 1-0 margin.
The Rocks responded in the fourth. With one out, Alex McClure reached on a Roman Mendez strikeout and Telis passed ball. Cheslor Cuthbert's single pushed him to second and Roman Hernandez knocked him home with a two-out poke to right field later in the inning.
That was all the Blue Rocks would muster against Mendez (1-0). Featuring a heavy diet of superior breaking balls, the right-hander whiffed nine men and walked none over six frames of one-run ball.
Making his Advanced-A debut, Wilmington starter Jason Adam hurled five frames of one-run, four-hit ball. He struck out four and walked two. His successor, Chase Boruff, bounced back from a shaky start in the sixth. Hoying applied early pressure with a first-pitch bunt to begin the frame. Telis' double to left-center pushed the Pelicans ahead, 2-1, while a bruise to Villanueva and a Vinny DiFazio single then loaded the bases.
Boruff (0-1) wiggled out of the ham by notching consecutive strikeouts of Jake Skole and Andrew Clark. Help from shortstop Alex McClure put out the threat's final embers. His athletic diving stop of a hard groundball up the middle from Santiago Chirino worked in concert with a great throw while lying on the dirt to get an inning-ending force at second.
Alas, the Blue Rocks would not put another run across on the night. Reliever Francisco Mendoza walked Brian Fletcher to start the seventh. But the offensive hope quickly dimmed when consecutive fielder's choices followed and the Rocks eventually left men at the corners. Ben Rowen hurled a perfect eighth and faced the minimum in the ninth to bolt down his first save. He faced a brief hurdle in the final frame, but Cuthbert's leadoff walk was erased when Fletcher subsequently bounced into a 1-6-3 double play.
The three-game set concludes on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. Wilmington's Yordano Ventura, who has been clocked at 100 mph during his career, makes his Advanced-A debut against right-hander Nick Tepesch. Broadcast coverage begins at 5:35 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
