Dash Topple Mudcats with Fourth Inning Flurry

ZEBULON, NC - For the second straight game, the Winston-Salem Dash took the early lead, and used a four-run fourth to beat the Carolina Mudcats 7-2 in front of an announced crowd of 3,181 at Five County Stadium.

Andre Rienzo (1-0) lived up to his preseason billing, hurling five innings. The starting pitcher for the Dash held Carolina to one run and two hits. He notched five strikeouts.

Mudcats' starter Mike Rayl (0-1) was lifted from the game after four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. The south paw fanned five batters.

Winston-Salem got on the board first in the second inning. Mike Blanke crushed a solo shot over the left field wall. In the third, Michael Earley reached on a two-base error, and scored two outs later on a double by Carlos Sanchez.

Carolina struck back in their half of the third. Tyler Holt doubled to lead off the frame, and moved to third on a wild pitch. He later scored on sacrifice fly by Giovanny Urshela.

The fourth inning proved to be the Mudcats' undoing. The Dash scored four runs thanks to four consecutive hits and a walk. Earley doubled in a pair, and Jake Oester brought in two more with a single.

Winston-Salem scored their final run on a wild pitch with two out in the ninth.

The Mudcats had several chances to climb back into the game late. The club had runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings, but could only manage a run. In all, the Mudcats stranded nine base runners, six in the last three frames.

The Mudcats finish up their series against the Winston-Salem Dash at Five County Stadium on Sunday, April 8, at 2:00 p.m. RH Michael Goodnight (0-0, 0.00) will start against LH Spencer Arroyo (0-0, 0.00) for the Dash.
