Webcast available on www.wsdash.com 15 minutes before first pitch

Game No. 86 | Home Game No. 48 | 2011 Home Record 22-24 | 2011 Road Record 17-21

LHP Matt Wickswat (0-1, 3.57) vs. RHP Wilfredo Boscan (2-5, 4.57)

Early Work: The Pelicans wasted little time in building a large lead, scoring seven times in the second and third innings en route to an 8-2 whipping of the Dash last night at BB&T Ballpark. After a scoreless first inning, the first four batters of the second reached base against Andre Rienzo, who was then lifted from the game with an elbow injury, and all four scored. Myrtle added three more in the third inning against J.R. Ballinger and never looked back. Winston-Salem's only offense of the night came from a seventh inning two-run homer off Tyler Saladino's bat. The Dash managed only four hits, but also walked a season-high-tying eight times. Winston has lost four of its last five games and trails Kinston by 2.5 games for first place in the Southern Division.

Thursday Night Smackdown: Thursdays remained unkind to Winston-Salem, as evidenced by last night's six-run loss. The Dash fell to 1-10 on the fifth day of the week, the team's worst record on any particular day of the week this season. Winston's best day is Sunday, when the team is 9-3.

Big Hit Blues: Last night the Dash went 1 for 4 with runners in scoring position, continuing a trend of failing to produce timely base hits with runners at second or third base. Over their last three games, the Dash are just 3 for 25 with runners in scoring position, leaving 26 men on base combined.

Oral Rocket: Dash shortstop Tyler Saladino bashed his 11th home run last night to keep the team from getting shut out. Despite missing the first month of the season, the former Oral Roberts standout, is tied for fifth in the Carolina League in homers, averaging one per every 17 at bats. If he had the requisite number of at bats, he would rank second only to Ian Gac in best HR/AB ratio. Since June 5, Saladino is hitting .313 (31 for 99) with nine doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 15 RBI, and 18 runs scored.

Entering the Hector Sector: A day after making his major league debut with a scoreless ninth inning against the Royals, former Dash pitcher Hector Santiago strengthened his hold on the major league record for lowest ERA of all-time. The lefty threw 4.1 shutout innings against the Twins last night after Philip Humber's start was cut short. Santiago struck out one, walked one, and allowed his first hit. The first batter he retired was former All-Star Jim Thome. Santiago pitched for Winston-Salem in all of 2009 and 2010, and started 2011 with the Dash, making eight starts before a promotion to Birmingham. He had spent more than a week on Chicago's active roster before finally appearing in his first game on Wednesday.

Stereo Ciolli: For the second straight day, Dash right fielder Nick Ciolli made a catch that landed on SportsCenter's "Top Plays" segment. Ciolli robbed Travis Adair of a grand slam Wednesday night in the fourth inning, banging into the same fence he tumbled over to take a home run away from David Mailman against Salem on Tuesday. Ciolli's most recent catch ranked number five on today's top ten, while his catch the night before came in at number two. Both catches can be seen on the Dash's YouTube channel at youtube.com/wsdashbaseball.

Earning Time and a Half, Time and Again: Playing and winning in extra innings is nothing new for Winston-Salem. The Dash have played 15 extra-inning games this season, the most of any minor league baseball team. Only the major league Atlanta Braves (16) have played more extra-inning games this season. Winston is 9-6 this season when the game goes beyond regulation. Five of the Dash's extra-inning games this season have come against the Pelicans, with Winston winning three of those contests.

Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Wilfredo Boscan (2-5, 4.57) makes his 11th start and 13th appearance of the season for the Pelicans and his second against the Dash. He pitched well in a no-decision against Winston-Salem last month, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings. Boscan joined the Pelicans from AA Frisco, where he struggled to start the season. He went 1-3 with a 6.95 ERA in five starts, surrendering 30 hits in 22 innings. Last year for Advanced-A Bakersfield, Boscan went 9-14 with a 4.67 ERA in 27 starts, striking out 130 and walking 40 in 163.2 innings. He was tied for ninth in the California League in wins, second in innings, and fifth in strikeouts. His finest season as a professional came in 2008, his first year stateside. He was a Northwest League All- Star after going 9-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 15 games (12 starts). His nine wins led the league and he struck out 70 while walking only 11 in 69.1 innings. Boscan was signed as a 16-year-old in 2006 out of Maracaibo, Venezuela.
