Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- RHP Wilfredo Boscan (2-5, 4.57) at LHP Matt Wickswat (0-1, 3.57) -
FINDING THE PLUG: Myrtle Beach's offensive success Thursday night was the antithesis of their Wednesday night struggles. The Pelicans managed four hits in 12 situations with runners in scoring position Thursday night, only leaving eight men on as a team and scirng eight times on ten hits through the course of the 8-2 victory. On Wednesday, Myrtle Beach went a head-scratching 6-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the series opener and left an absurd 16 men on the basepaths, including 14 through their first seven offensive innings of an 8-7, ten-inning loss to the Dash. Against Winston starter Joe Serafin, the Pelicans cranked out 13 hits and only plated four runs, not scoring until the fourth. Myrtle Beach left the bases loaded in three innings on the night, including two against Serafin. The only game in which Myrtle Beach left more men on this year was in their 5-4 walk-off win on June 8 at BB&T Coastal Field, also against the Dash. In that game, the Pelicans were even worse with RISP, going 4-for-21 and stranding 17 but still picked up the victory.
MY, OH MY!: Winston-Salem's Friday starter Wickswat is one of a handful of Pacific Northwesterners on each roster hailing from the Seattle area. Winston's lefty is a product of Issaquah High School and a native and resident of affluent Bellevue, Washington, most notably known as the home of billionaire Bill Gates. Former Rangers prospect Ian Gac is also an Emerald City native, graduating from Edmonds-Woodway High School and residing in Seattle. Myrtle Beach's Jared Prince also grew up outside of Seattle and calls Kingston, Washington home. Of the three, he's the only one to play collegiate ball in his home state, attending Washington State University from where the Rangers drafted him in the 34th round in 2009.
INJURY UPDATE: In Wednesday's series opener, the Pelicans lost both shortstop Leury Garcia and first baseman Chris McGuiness to injuries. McGuiness felt a twinge in his knee after getting into the dugout following his third-inning single, and Garcia pulled up lame after legging out an infield knock in the top of the fourth inning. As of Friday, McGuiness has been placed on the disabled list (knee). The Pelicans will receive promoted reliever Ryan Rodebaugh from Hickory (A). Garcia is day-to-day with a groin problem but was taking swings in the batting cage prior to the Pelicans series-evening win over the Dash on Thursday night.
