Going Platinum: Last night the Dash had a season-high 15 hits en route to a 9-1 thrashing of the Frederick Keys at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem scored their runs in bunches, tallying two in the third, four in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Winston's three Carolina League All-Stars (Jose Martinez, Ian Gac, Andy Wilkins) combined for six hits, six RBI, and four runs scored. Jared Mitchell added a career-high four hits in the ballgame as well. Tempers flared late in the game when both managers were ejected. Gac was hit with a pitch in the eighth inning, and Leroy Hunt threw behind Joe Oliveira with two outs in the ninth prompting the umpires to warn both benches. Dash Manager Julio Vinas contested the warnings, starting a shouting match with Keys Skipper Orlando Gomez. Both managers left the game, and Hunt induced a groundout to end the series finale.
No Longer the Bayne of His Existence: After losing his first two starts of the season against the Keys, RHP Cameron Bayne exercised the demons in last night's first half home finale. In eight innings, Bayne allowed one run (earned) on five hits and struck out three. He picked up his third win in his last four starts and went seven innings or longer for the third straight game. In 12 starts this season, Bayne has gone seven-plus in six and also has a team-leading six quality starts
Blue Rock-y Road: The Royals' Carolina League affiliate has dominated Winston-Salem this season, winning eight out of ten matchups between the teams. The games themselves have typically been close, with five of the Dash's losses coming by one or two runs. The Blue Rocks spent much of the first half atop the Northern Division, but have fallen on hard times as of late. Since May 27, Wilmington has lost 14 of its last 20 games. The tumble has dropped the Rocks to 6.5 games behind Frederick for first place in the Northern Division and eliminated them from playoff contention in the first half.
Ty High: Tyler Saladino bounced back from an 0 for 5 night on Monday to go 2 for 4 with two RBI in Tuesday' loss and had a hit and two runs scored on Wednesday. After missing the first month of the season with a broken hand, Saladino is starting take off offensively. He has a base hit in seven of his last nine games and a multi-hit game in five of the last eight contests he has played in. Since June 5, Saladino is batting .317 (13 for 41) with four doubles, one homer, seven RBI, and five runs scored. He has raised his batting average 40 points to .225 during this period.
Wilky Smooth: Andy Wilkins cracked his tenth home run of the season in the sixth inning last night, his second home run in three games. He also homered off the top of the center field wall in Monday's series opener. In the game, Wilkins had two hits and three RBI, ending a series in which he drove in six total runs. That came after he was named a Carolina League All-Star on Monday afternoon before the start of the three-game set. After struggling for most of the first half of the season, Wilkins started to break out in late May when he was named Carolina League Player of the Week (May 23-29). During that span, he hit .429 and increased his batting average by 23 points.
Tiger Bait: Jared Mitchell feasted on a four-hit performance last night, the first time he's had four hits in a game in his professional career. Between his time at LSU and in the White Sox organization, Mitchell has notched only one previous four-hit ballgame, on May 9, 2008 against Mississippi State when he was at LSU. Against the Bulldogs, Mitchell went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI, and four runs. Like Wilkins, Mitchell struggled to begin the season, but boosted his average by 11 points with the four-hit performance and now has a hit in four consecutive games and in 12 of his last 14 games.
Under Water: With their 36th loss of the season on Tuesday, the Dash are guaranteed to finish below .500 in the first half of 2011. Winston-Salem had not finished below .500 in a half since the first half of the 2008 season when the team was still the Warthogs. That year, the 'Hogs were 29-40 in the first half, but rebounded to go 42-28 in the second half and clinch a playoff berth.
Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Noel Arguelles (0-0, 1.46) makes his 11th start of the season and his third against Winston-Salem. He threw in two straight starts against Winston-Salem on April 23 and 30 where he went 1-0 and allowed three runs (two earned) in 9.2 innings. He would have picked up the win in his first game had he lasted two more outs. Arguelles defected from Cuba along with Red Sox shortstop prospect Jose Iglesias in July of 2008 at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada. He spent the next 18 months trying out for several different major league clubs before the Royals inking him to a five-year, $6.9 million contract. Kansas City rested him for a couple months, but the organization decided to shut him down for the entire 2010 season after realizing he had suffered a shoulder injury due to his numerous workouts. He had surgery on his left shoulder in August of 2010. When healthy, his fastball tops out at 94 mph and sits in the low-90s. He also throws a slider, a curveball, and a changeup. Prior to defecting, the 21-year-old Arguelles pitched in Cuba's Serie Nacional for La Habana Vaqueros (Havana Cowboys) from 2006 - 08 and for the Cuban team at the 2007 Pan-American Junior Championships, where he won the gold medal game with eight shutout innings against Mexico.
