Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (10-16) at LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (11-12) RHP Aron McRee (0-3, 4.80 ERA) vs. RHP Brock Hartson (0-0, 4.24 ERA) 11 a.m. - Calvin Falwell Field (Lynchburg, Va.) Game #27 (Road Game #17)
DUNNING SHINES IN DASH'S 1-0 VICTORY
In his High-A debut, right-hander Dane Dunning spun five shutout innings in Winston-Salem's 1-0 victory on Tuesday at Lynchburg. Dunning struck out five and scattered three hits over a 75-pitch performance. Both Kelvis Valerio and Aaron Bummer recorded two scoreless innings to earn a hold and save, respectively. The Dash's lone run scored on a throwing error by Hillcats starter Triston McKenzie with two down in the top of the fifth. McKenzie, the third-best prospect in Cleveland's system per MLB Pipeline, tossed seven strong innings in a tough-luck defeat.
REMARKABLE START TO 2017
In his five outings, four of which came in Low-A Kannapolis, Dunning has posted a 0.29 earned run average, which is fifth-best among Minor League qualifiers. In 31.0 innings of work, the former Florida Gator has surrendered two runs (one earned) on 16 hits. His 38 strikeouts are tied for sixth-most in the Minors, while his 0.61 WHIP is fourth-lowest.
JOINING A PRODUCTIVE ROTATION
Dunning continued a recent trend by posting the Dash's sixth consecutive start that featured three earned runs or fewer. Winston-Salem's rotation possesses a 2.03 ERA during this span. Wednesday starter Aron McRee began this streak last Thursday against Buies Creek with the shortest start during this span (3.2 innings). Overall, Winston's 3.22 team ERA is second to Lynchburg (3.04) in the Carolina League, while the Dash lead the way with a 1.18 WHIP.
AGGRESSIVE DEFENSE
Winston-Salem catcher Zack Collins erased three Lynchburg runners in Tuesday's win. Not only did Collins pick off a runner at second, but he caught both of the Hillcats' would-be base stealers. Collins is second in the league with a 50-percent caught stealing rate (Carolina's Max McDowell - 59%). He has gunned down 12 of 24 attempted thieves after only amassing three caught stealings in 19 tries last year in the CL.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING
Several Dash hitters have shined in recent games. Louis Silverio, who is 11th among CL qualifiers with a .325 average, has hit safely in nine straight games, with his lone hit on Tuesday being a ninth-inning single. During this run, the second-longest by a Dash hitter this year, Silverio boasts a .417 (15-for-36) mark with 10 RBIs and four runs. Ronald Bueno is riding an eight-game hitting streak, during which he owns a .355 average (11-for-31). Luis Basabe has recorded at least one hit in 15 of his last 16 games. Over this span, which dates back to April 13, Basabe is hitting 19-for-60 (.317) with six runs and three RBIs. During this series with the Hillcats, seven of Winston-Salem's nine total hits have come from this red-hot triumvirate, with Danny Mendick logging the other two knocks.
ONE MORE STOP
After Wednesday's rubber match in Lynchburg, the Dash will head to the final city of the club's longest road trip since July of 2011. Winston and Salem will square off in a four-game series from Thursday to Sunday, marking the first of five series between the former division rivals. The Red Sox jumped to the Northern Division this year when Buies Creek and Down East, both located in North Carolina, joined the circuit.
THIRD TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Winston-Salem improved to 3-13 when scoring three runs or less with the club's second 1-0 win of 2017 (April 23 at Wilmington, 11 innings). The Dash's .233 team batting average is ninth on the 10-team circuit, with only Wilmington below the Dash (.219). The Dash are also last in the CL with just nine home runs as a team.
DASH DOTS
Winston-Salem has committed five errors in its last four games after churning out a 46-inning errorless stretch, its longest of the season...On Tuesday, the Dash posted their first multi-error game since April 21 at Wilmington...Seven Dash players are riding double-digit errorless streaks.
