DASH BLANK P-NATS IN OPENER
Behind a phenomenal start from Luis Martinez and scoreless relief outings from Zach Thompson and Matt Foster, the Dash shut out the Potomac Nationals 3-0 on Friday night at Pftizner Stadium. Martinez logged his best start as a member of the Dash, tossing six innings and allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out three. The lone scoring in the game took place in the second inning. After Potomac's starter Tyler Mapes registered two quick outs, the righty hit Zach Remillard to extend the inning. Ti'Quan Forbes followed with a single, and Daniel Gonzalez, who was playing in his first game this season, stroked a run-scoring single to right in his first at-bat to put Winston-Salem ahead 1-0. The next batter, Joel Booker, lined an RBI single to center to make it a 2-0 contest. Winston-Salem added its final run thanks to an errant pickoff attempt to second that scored Gonzalez. Thompson threw two strong inning of middle relief before Foster locked down his third save of the year.
MORE ON THE PITCHING
Martinez, who had dropped back-to-back outings prior to Saturday, now has three High-A wins thanks to Friday's victory. Prior to the season, Martinez had an 0-2 record with a 9.00 ERA in five outings with the Dash. Thompson, who is in his third go-around with Winston-Salem, has a 2.76 ERA with a team-best 15 appearances. Finally, Foster has recorded 14 outings, and he has allowed just one earned run over his last 14 innings.
PACING WELL AHEAD OF LAST YEAR
At 26-22 overall, the Dash are well ahead of where they stood last year through 48 games. At this point in 2017, the club was just 13-25 and in dead last within the Southern Division. This season, Winston is currently just one game back of Buies Creek and Down East for the top spot in the standings. The Dash's success has been due to a balance of offense and pitching. Winston is second in the league in average, on-base percentage and slugging, and the third-best ERA at 3.76.
NICE TO SEE YOU, POTOMAC
Saturday marks the second game of a four-game set at Pfitzner Stadium and the second meeting between the Dash and the Nationals this season. Overall, Winston-Salem and Potomac will square off against one another seven times in 2018, which is the second-fewest games against an opponent this year. The only team the Dash play less this year is Lynchburg (six games). The P-Nats currently lead the Carolina League in several offensive categories, including runs (245), hits (437), home runs (42), slugging percentage (.432) and on-base percentage (.364).
STARS IN THE OUTFIELD
As expected, the Dash have one of the best outfields in all of Minor League Baseball. Of the five outfielders on the roster, here are the top three performers so far this year, along with their rankings on MLB Pipeline's list of prospects within the White Sox system:
Micker Adolfo (10th): .299 AVG with 6HR and 30RBIs
Luis Basabe (13th): .276 AVG, .895 OPS, seven homers
Blake Rutherford (seventh): .299 AVG, 3HR and 31 RBIs (team-best)
MR. RELIABLE
Left-hander Bernardo Flores, who has registered six quality starts this year, gets the ball in game two of this four-game series. Flores gave up a career-high 10 hits on Monday against Buies Creek, but he lasted seven innings for the second time this season. The southpaw has yet to go fewer than five innings in a start this year. Overall, Flores is 3-3 with a 2.90 ERA in eight starts. The former USC Trojan won his first High-A game against the Nationals at BB&T Ballpark, tossing five shutout innings in a win on August 4, 2017.
