TONIGHT: The Mudcats continue an eight game home stand today with the second game of a four game series versus the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats are currently 4-1 in their eight game home stand after recently winning three of four from the Down East Wood Ducks and winning last night's series opener against the Pelicans.
ICYMI: Keston Hiura delivered a walk-off, three-run home run in the tenth as the Mudcats defeated the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4-1 in front of a crowd of 4,268 on Friday night at Five County Stadium.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Keston Hiura's walk-off home run in last night's series opening victory was the first walk-off home run hit by a Mudcats player since July 18, 2013 when Bryson Myles delivered a game-winning blast to beat the Winston-Salem Dash in the 14th inning at Five County Stadium.
VS. BIRDS: Today's game is the second of a four game series between the Mudcats and Pelicans at Five County Stadium. It is also the 8th of 21 total games between the two teams this season. Carolina leads the overall season series 4-3; with the Mudcats owning a 2-1 record at home and a 1-2 on the road against Myrtle Beach this season.
MUDCATS STARTER: RHP Conor Harber has tonight's game two of four start for the Mudcats against the visiting Pelicans. Harber enters tonight's start at 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA over 10 games and three starts this season. He has also totaled 38 strikeouts, 24 walks and a .207 average against over 34.2 innings pitched. Harber is currently 4th in CL in earned run average (2.08) among pitches with at least 30.0 innings pitched this season. He last pitched on May 23 versus the Wood Ducks where he walked three and struck out two over 2.2 scoreless innings pitched. The appearance was his fourth straight out of the Carolina bullpen and his fourth straight while following starter Braden Webb. Harber last started on May 3 in Myrtle Beach and finished with five strikeouts, three walks and three hits allowed over 4.1 scoreless innings pitched... Harber is 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA (9.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 BB, 10 SO, .161 AVG) against the Pelicans this season.
OPP STARTER: RHP Keegan Thompson starts for the Pelicans in tonight's game at Five County Stadium. Thompson is 1-3 this season and has pitched to a 4.14 ERA over eight starts and 41.1 innings pitched. He has also totaled 38 strikeouts, nine walks and a .255 average against so far this season. Thompson last pitched on May 20 in Frederick where suffered a loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5.0 innings pitched. He also struck out six his last time out and walked one. Thompson is currently 4th in the CL in lowest-BB-IBB/9ip ratio (1.96). He is also 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA (10.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 10 SO) in two starts against the Mudcats this season.
HOTCATS: Carolina is 7-1 since 5/18 (5.5 R/G, 2.19 ERA). The Mudcats have also won back-to-back series after winning three of four from Down East between 5/21 & 5/24 and after sweeping Buies Creek at Jim Perry Stadium between 5/18 & 5/20.
SINCE WHEN: The Mudcats are 11-7 since May 7 and own a +29 run differential over that same span... The Carolina pitching staff has collectively pitched to a 2.35 ERA and the offense has averaged 4.39 runs per game since May 7... The Carolina starting rotation is 6-3 with nine quality starts and a 1.64 ERA since May 7 (93.1 IP, 36 BB, 86 SO)... The Carolina bullpen is 5-4-5 and has pitched to a 3.29 ERA since May 7 (65.2 IP, 29 BB, 59 SO).
THE LEADER: Cam Roegner leads both the Carolina League and Minor League Baseball (among qualified pitchers) in lowest earned run average this season having pitched to a 0.68 ERA (53.1 IP, 4 ER) this season. Roegner is also 1st the CL in LOB% (95.2%), 4th in GB% (53.4%), 2nd in WHIP (1.01), 2nd in fewest baserunners/9ip (9.28), tied for 1st in wins (6), 4th in average against (.213) and 1st in innings pitched (53.1).
WHERE THEY RANK: Keston Hiura leads the Carolina League in doubles (15), tied for 3rd in hits (54) and is tied for the CL lead in extra-base hits (22). Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (27) and is 1st in MiLB in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.529) for catchers with at least 30 attempts against.
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is batting a CL low .232 with runners on base. They are also batting a CL low .241 with runners in scoring position. The Mudcats have additionally struck out a league high 222 times when batting with runners on base this season and a CL high 132 times with RISP.
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 93 more strikeouts than hits (476 SO, 383 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the 4th largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
