SALEM SHOCKS DASH IN EXTRA INNINGS

Winston-Salem was cruising through seven innings during Friday's series opener, but the Salem Red Sox rallied for a 6-3, 11-inning victory in front of 5,980 fans at BB&T Ballpark. The Sox tallied two unearned runs in the eighth before knotting the score on a Mario Martinez RBI single in the ninth. Salem snagged its first lead of the contest with a three-run 11th against Jose Brito, with Jake Romanski's pinch-hit, run-scoring double proving to be the game winning hit. As a result, the Dash have dropped a season-worst 7.5 games behind first place in the Southern Division's first half standings.

TOUGH-LUCK LEYER

Friday starter Robinson Leyer submitted his best outing of the season. He puzzled Salem through a season-high six stellar innings, during which he whiffed four. Salem's lone hit against Leyer came in the fifth when Aneury Tavarez led off with a double. This marks the second consecutive quality start that the Dash have wasted. In Thursday's rubber match at Salem, Jace Fry worked seven innings and gave up just one run. Before these two outings, the Dash were 8-1 when receiving a quality start.

HASN'T HAPPENED MUCH

For just the second time in 17 games, Winston-Salem native Chris Jacobs failed to collect a base hit on Friday night. Still, Jacobs is sixth in the Carolina League with a .297 batting average. In his last 17 games, Jacobs is hitting .393 (24-for-61) with 13 RBIs. In his first 16 games, Jacobs was a .180 hitter with three RBIs.

FRONT NINE

Dash catcher Omar Narvaez had hit safely in nine consecutive games until his 0-for-4 effort on Friday. During this run, Narvaez had only recorded a multi-hit game once. He was a .286 hitter (10-for-35) with three RBIs and three runs scored. He fell one game shy of matching the longest hit streak by a Carolina Leaguer in 2015. The aforementioned Jacobs posted a 10-game run from April 29-May 9.

SWIPE RIGHT

For the 13th time this season, Winston-Salem speedsters Keenyn Walker and Adam Engel swiped a base in the same game. Walker leads the CL with 22 stolen bases, while Engel is next with 20. Walker is alone in third place in the Minors in swipes, while Engel shares fifth place in the category. Charleston's Jorge Mateo paces the Minors with 27. The outfield duo has accounted for 74 percent of the Dash's 57 stolen bases, which are good for the top spot in the CL and fourth place in the Minors. Asheville (Low-A, Colorado) leads the Minor Leagues with 77.

RUN AWAY

Both Engel and Walker also represent the top two scorers on the circuit. Engel has touched home a league-best 26 times, while Walker is tied for second with Frederick's Brenden Webb at 24. Engel also enjoys a share of the CL's top spot with another Key--infielder Drew Dosch--in hits (40), while he is fifth in total bases (57).

BARNUM HEADS TO DISABLED LIST

The Chicago White Sox announced Friday that first baseman Keon Barnum has been placed on the disabled list due to an oblique injury. Barnum is tied for the team lead with two home runs, and his 17 RBIs are third-most on the club. In a corresponding move, Winston-Salem has added fellow infielder T.J. Williams. He was hitting .273 with nine RBIs and 13 runs scored in 25 games with Low-A Kannapolis this season. Williams made his High-A debut as the Dash's first baseman and nine-hole hitter on Friday.

DASH DOTS

By June 2, the Dash will have played Salem 14 times in 22 days, including seven in the Triad (May 15-17; May 30-June 2)...Saturday marks Jake Cose's third start of the season...He had not made a Minor League appearance in 613 days prior to this three-outing stretch...The Dash were just 2-for-15 with men in scoring position during Friday's loss...Winston-Salem committed a season-worst five errors, two more than its previous low-water mark defensively.
