ZEBULON, N.C. (MAY 16, 2015) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Wilfredo Boscan from Triple-A Indianapolis. Boscan (bose-KAHN), who pitched for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in 2011 as a Texas Rangers farmhand, looks to make his Major League debut, and is the 128th former Pelican to make it to the big leagues after his time in Myrtle Beach.

Boscan, 25, has played nine seasons in the minor leagues, mostly in the Texas system. In six seasons as a Rangers farmhand, he made it as high as Double-A Frisco. The right-hander was traded on December 6, 2012, as the player-to-be-named-later, in a move that sent right-handed pitcher Cory Burns to Texas on November 28, 2012. The Pirates signed Boscan as a minor league free agent and non-roster invitee to Major League Spring Training on January 9, 2015.

In six appearances, all starts, for Triple-A Indianapolis, Boscan had posted a 2-1 record with a 2.87 ERA, striking out 20 and walking 11 in 31.1 innings.

During his time in Myrtle Beach, the Maracaibo, Zulia, Venezuela native, went 4-12 in 22 outings, 20 starts, and logged 119 innings, second on the 2011 club only to Robbie Ross Jr. He struck out 72 and walked 30.

Boscan was promoted in the wake of a 12-inning, 11-10 defeat for the Pirates to the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. In a corresponding set of moves, the Pirates optioned infielder Steve Lombardozzi and transferred right-handed pitcher Brandon Cumpton from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

The Pirates next play on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The Pelicans continue their road trip with a 6:00 p.m. ET tilt with the Carolina Mudcats in Zebulon, North Carolina.

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
