RUTHERFORD'S BLAST LIFTS DASH
Blake Rutherford crushed a three-run homer off the scoreboard in right field in the top of the 10th to propel the Dash to a 10-8 win over the Red Sox at Haley Toyota Field on Wednesday night. Joel Booker started the final frame of the night as the placed runner on second base and moved to third on a single from Alex Call. Then, Rutherford came to the plate and drove the 0-1 offering over the fence for his second home run of the season to give the Dash a 10-7 lead. Matt Foster allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th, but nothing more to earn his professional win.
BLAKE IS BALLIN'
Rutherford currently leads the Dash and is second in the Carolina League with a .333 average. The former first-round pick has at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games. In that span, Rutherford is batting .326 (17-for-52) with a double, two triples, two homers and 15 RBIs. On Wednesday, Rutherford finished the game 2-for-5 with a home run and a career-high five RBIs.
MAY(HEM)
The Dash are wreaking havoc on the Carolina League to begin the month of May. Across nine games, the Dash offense is batting a collective .303 with 28 doubles and eight home runs. They are also outscoring opponents 66-34. The pitching staff has been just as good, sporting a 2.30 ERA. Winston-Salem has won each of its last five games, and eight of the first nine games to start the month.
HELLO, DOWN EAST
The Wood Ducks visit BB&T Ballpark for the first time this season. Winston-Salem and Down East squared off at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C., in a three-game series during the third week of the season, with the Woodies winning two of the three contests. However, the Dash smacked 18 hits in their lone victory, pummeling the Wood Ducks 14-4. The Dash and the Woodies will face each other a total of 26 times throughout the season, the most of any team in the circuit.
PACKING A PUNCH
Following back-to-back five-hit efforts at the end of April, the offense has re-established themselves as the best in the 10-team circuit with solid performances to begin the month of May. Winston sits atop the Carolina League in several offensive categories, including batting average (.286), on-base percentage (.368), slugging percentage (.449), hits (322) and doubles (82). Meanwhile, the team is second in the league in runs scored (179), third in homers (27) and third in stolen bases (29).
