Game #66 (Home Game #31)
UNDERWOOD, BIRDS OVERWHELM DASH
Myrtle Beach starter Duane Underwood, Jr., limited Winston-Salem to two hits over seven strong innings in the Pelicans' 6-0 victory on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash only mustered three hits and four base runners the entire game, one night after matching a season-high with 16 knocks. Winston-Salem righty Matt Heidenreich did post a quality start, but he gave up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over six innings. He punched out eight, giving him 18 over his last two starts spanning 13 frames.
19 FOR NUMBER 3
With a single in Tuesday's first inning, Jake Peter pushed his hitting streak to 19 games. Since May 27, the former seventh-round pick is 24-for-72 (.333) with 12 RBIs and 15 runs. Among active streaks in Minor League Baseball, Peter's 19-game surge is tied for the second-longest. Dalton Pompey of New Hampshire (Double-A, Toronto) has hit safely in 22 games in a row, including his day game on Wednesday when his lone hit came as a double in the 13th inning. Peter is even with Franklin Gutierrez of Tacoma (Triple-A, Seattle) for second.
LITTLE DRAMA
Peter has extended his hit streak in the first inning in five of the last six games. Overall, the former Creighton star has come up with a hit in the opening frame in seven of the 19 games in this impressive streak. Only twice has Peter entered the seventh inning in search of his first base hit. This includes the only game over the last six when he did not hit safely in the first; on Sunday at Carolina, Peter delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning.
DASHING TOWARD THE TOP
Peter's 19-game hit streak is tied for the second-longest in the Dash era (2009-present). With a hit Wednesday night, Peter will become the second Dash hitter to post a 20-game hit streak:
Brandon Short: 26 (April 11-May 8, 2010)
Jon Gilmore: 19 (May 31-June 19, 2010) / 2. JAKE PETER: 19 (May 27-present)
ANOTHER SERIES WIN?
With a win Wednesday, Winston-Salem will earn its third consecutive series victory. The Dash took three of four from first-place Wilmington last week before escaping Carolina with a three-game series win this past weekend. The Dash dropped seven consecutive series from May 1-25, but they have a chance to win their fourth over the last five completed series, with the yet-to-be-completed set against Salem from May 30-June 2 still a potential win. The Dash and Red Sox will complete that series finale on Saturday with the Dash leading 3-0 in the game and 2-1 in the four-game series.
JACOBS PROMOTED TO DOUBLE-A
Infielder Chris Jacobs earned a promotion to Double-A Birmingham, the White Sox announced Tuesday. Jacobs, a native of Winston-Salem, hit .279 with three homers and 27 RBIs in his 58 games with the Dash. This marks his first trip to Double-A since 2013 while with the Dodgers system. In a corresponding move, fellow slugger Keon Barnum (oblique) has been activated from the disabled list. The White Sox 27th-best prospect according to MLB.com, Barnum went 0-for-4 in his return to the lineup on Tuesday.
JIRSCHELE BECOMES HITTING COACH
Former Dash utility player Justin Jirschele has been named the hitting coach for the system's rookie-level affiliate in Great Falls, Mont. The White Sox released Jirschele while he was with Double-A Birmingham earlier this season. He spent part of the last two seasons with the Dash. Jirschele is replacing 2014 Voyagers hitting coach Greg Briley, who will miss the season due to back surgery. The Voyagers kick off their 2015 campaign on Thursday at Billings.
DASH DOTS
Trey Michalczewski is day-to-day with an unspecified injury...Before sitting out the Dash's last four contests, Michalczewski had started every game of the year for the Dash...The Dash will try to play spoiler against the Pelicans, who own a magic number of three in the division race.
