WINSTON-SALEM DASH (8-8, 38-47) vs. WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (7-8, 40-43)
RHP Terance Marin (2-0, 2.37 ERA) vs. LHP Jonathan Dziedzic (5-5, 3.00 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.) Game #86 (Home Game #42)
SPARKMAN, ROCKS SHINE ON JULY 4 Wilmington starter Glenn Sparkman took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in the Blue Rocks' 5-0 win over the Dash on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 8,184 fans at BB&T Ballpark. Sparkman surrendered just the one knock, a Joey DeMichele single with one down in the seventh, over seven stellar innings, while Kyle Bartsch held Winston-Salem to one hit over the final two frames to complete the shutout. The Blue Crew scored all of their runs in the first five innings, with Bubba Starling's two-run blast to right-center capping the offense.
RECORD ATTENDANCE The Dash set a BB&T Ballpark attendance record with their draw of 8,184 fans on Friday night. The previous record was 7,576, which occurred last season on July 4. The Dash are currently second to Frederick in overall (163,889) and average (4,313) attendance in the Carolina League. Winston-Salem will likely surpass the 1.4-million mark in BB&T Ballpark's four-and-a-half year history on Saturday night, as another sellout crowd is expected.
0-FOR-4 ON THE FOURTH OF JULY For the fourth straight season, the Dash dropped a home game on Independence Day. Salem bested Winston 9-7 in 2011, while Myrtle Beach knocked off the Dash in 2012 (8-4) and 2013 (8-5, F/11). Winston-Salem has not claimed an Independence Day victory since 2010, when the Dash won at Lynchburg by a score of 6-4.
WINCING WINSTON Winston-Salem has suffered some critical injuries this week. On Wednesday, shortstop Tim Anderson (right wrist) and right-hander Frank Montas (right knee) were placed on the disabled list. That night, Courtney Hawkins suffered a concussion and joined Anderson and Montas on the disabled list Thursday. Thus, the Dash lost two first-round picks and a pitcher who was supposed to suit up for the World Team in next weekend's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
DeMICHELE'S DOZEN Winston-Salem infielder Joey DeMichele has hit safely in 14 consecutive games dating back to June 20. Thus, DeMichele has surpassed Justin Jirschele's 13-game run from May 1-June 3 as the longest by a Dash hitter in 2014. During this spurt, DeMichele is hitting .315 (17-for-54) with six RBIs and five runs. The Phoenix native is two games shy of the longest hitting streak on the circuit in 2014. Carolina's Erik Gonzalez (April 8-24) and Lynchburg's Kyle Wren (May 28-June 12), both of whom have graduated to Double-A, recorded 16-game hit streaks.
MARIN THE GROOVE Dash starter Terance Marin has thrived since returning to the organization after the All-Star break. Marin, who made six sensational starts for independent Evansville between his stints with the White Sox system, has surrendered just one earned run in his 18 innings as a starter for the Dash. He gave up 10 runs (four earned) in one inning during his two relief efforts with the Dash before the Sox released him on April 11. Two of Marin's three starts have spanned at least seven innings, something he had never accomplished previously in the Minors.
NO-HIT HISTORY Glenn Sparkman's no-hit attempt matched the longest against the Dash this season. Salem's duo of Brian Johnson and Dayan Diaz also combined for 6.1 no-hit innings on April 18. Winston avoided its first no-hitter since former big leaguer John Maine held Winston-Salem without a hit in a seven-inning Frederick win on July 3, 2003. Winston has not suffered a nine-inning no-no since April 14, 1995, when Wilmington's Jose Rosado and Pat Flury combined on the gem.
DASH DOTS The Dash have scored just 30 runs in their 11 meetings against Wilmington in 2014 (2.7 per game)...Winston has suffered eight shutout defeats this season after a combined 15 from 2011-2013 (never more than six in one season).
