Zebulon, NC (July 5, 2014) - Pat Light was outstanding for the second straight time out, allowing just a run on three hits in six innings to give the Salem Sox a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium Saturday night. Light walked two and struck out two, picking up his third win of the season. Cole Sulser was the loser for Carolina, going five and a third, surrendering four hits and three runs, with three walks and five strikeouts.
The game was scoreless until the third. Yhoxian Medina doubled with one out off Light, followed immediately by a double by Logan Vick to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
Salem would answer in short order in the top of the fourth. Mike Miller led off the frame with a single. Miller's hit gave the infielder a five game hitting streak. After a groundout and back to back walks to Carson Blair and Kevin Heller, Aneury Tavarez singled in Miller to tie the game at one. Then Sulser walked Jordan Weems to bring in a second run and give the Sox a 2-1 lead.
The scored held 2-1 until the sixth. Tavarez tripled with one out and scored on a Ryan Dent sacrifice fly to give the Sox a needed insurance run.
Carolina added a run in the eight off Madison Younginer. Medina walked with one out, and scored on a two out RBI single to left by LeVon Washington to make it 3-2. Younginer finished with two innings pitched, one hit and one run allowed, with a walk and a strikeout.
The Mudcats threatened in the ninth off Dayan Diaz. The right hander allowed a hit and two walks to load the bases, but two strikeouts shut the door on Carolina's chances.
