Salem RidgeYaks News Release
The Salem Sox look to bounce back from last night's walk-off defeat in game two of the three game set with the Mudcats. First pitch is at 6:00.
I Want To Go Home: Last night's 7-6 loss in ten innings last night continues the drastic differential in the Salem Sox play at home versus on the road this year. Last night's loss dropped the Sox to ten games under .500 on the road this year. Salem has now dropped 23 of its last 30 road games. Conversely the Sox are 24-17 at LewisGale Field this season, including wins in 22 of 34 in their home ballpark. Since June 1st, Salem is 10-3 at home and 3-13 on the road. This comes as a stark contrast from the beginning of the season. The Sox began the year 9-3 on the road and just 2-5 at home.
Streaks at the Top: Matty Johnson and Mike Miller are each in the midst of a hot streak. Johnson's 2-5 day last night gives Matty a five game hitting streak going into tonight's contest. The Sox leadoff man is hitting .400 over the life of that streak (8/20). Johnson has been red hot the last two games, with five hits, including just his second home run of the season. Mike Miller has been even hotter in the number two hole. Miller has hit in four straight games, with
a .571 average during his streak (8/14). Miller's best day came on July 2nd, when he went 4-4 with a walk and two runs scored against the Frederick Keys.
The Power Source: Aneury Tavarez has been the surprise power lead- er for the Salem Sox this year. Tavarez hit his ninth long ball of the year last night, two clear of the second most on the team (Blair, 7). Aneury has hit in five straight games and six of seven overall, hold- ing a .391 average in his last seven games. Tavarez has been hot for nearly a month now. Aneury's average hit a mid-season low .186 on June 1st. Since that point, he's hitting .314 (32/102), raising his sea- son average to .240 coming into play tonight.
Coming Full Circle: The last time the Salem Sox visited Carolina, Car- son Blair was at his season's statistical low point. Blair came into the May 16th contest hitting just .136 on the year, hitless in his pre- vious five, with a total of just 12 hits on the season. Since that point, Blair has turned his season around with a hot streak that seems to never want to end. Since May 16th, in 21 games played and two stints on the disabled list, Blair is hitting .427, with 32 hits in 75 at- bats. Carson's raised his season average more than 130 points dur- ing the stretch, all the way to .270. Blair has hit in 17 of his last 21 games, with one of those games Blair only getting one plate appear- ance as a pinch hitter, during which he walked. In all but three days during the stretch, Blair season average was higher when the day ended than it was when it started.
The Light Combination: After two rough outings to start the second half, Pat Light bounced back nicely in his last start. Light picked up the win in five innings, allowing a lone unearned run on five hits. That performance came on the heels of two starts where Light com- bined to allow 20 hits and 15 runs in six and a third. Light is looking to turn around his luck away from LewisGale Field tonight. While Pat has posted a 3.62 ERA in six home starts (11 ER/27.1 IP), his road ERA is 9.00 in six starts away from Salem (29 ER/29.0 IP).
