Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats dropped their first game of the home stand as the Salem Red Sox escaped 3-2 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (10-7, 39-45) saw their four-game winning streak end. The Red Sox (8-8, 41-43) won just their third road game of the second half.

Cole Sulser (3-8) shouldered the loss for the Mudcats after hurling 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander allowed all three of Salem's runs on four hits while striking out five. Clayton Cook finished off the game, fanning four batters while relenting just two hits.

Pat Light (3-4) earned the win for Salem, hurling six strong innings and giving up just one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Madison Younginer gave the Red Sox a solid relief effort, allowing a run on one hit. Dayan Diaz salvaged his sixth save despite allowing three base runners in the ninth.

Carolina opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third with two, one-out doubles from Yhoxian Medina and Logan Vick. Medina crossed home after Vick launched the ball off the base of the right field wall, giving the Mudcats a 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox responded in the fourth inning with two runs of their own. Sulser walked three and allowed two singles to Michael Miller and Aneury Tavarez during the rally.

A triple from Tavarez in the sixth turned into a third Salem run thanks to a sac-fly to center by Ryan Dent.

The Mudcats crept closer in the bottom of the eight. Medina earned a one-out walk and stole second. With two down, LeVon Washington singled to left and Medina scored without a throw to draw Carolina within one at 3-2.

Carolina attempted a rally in the ninth inning, loading the bases on a single by Yandy Diaz and walks to Jeremy Lucas and Jerrud Sabourin, but Diaz was able to fan a pair to close it out.

The series with the Salem Red Sox concludes with World Cup Day and Kids Run the Bases, presented by Amerigas, on Sunday afternoon. First pitch inside Five County Stadium is set for 2 p.m. Tickets and other information are available by calling the box office at (919) 269-2287 or by logging on to carolinamudcats.com.
