PILKINGTON, BATS GUIDE DASH TO WIN

Thanks to a quality start from Konnor Pilkington and six runs in the first two innings from the offense, the Dash earned a 6-4 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. Making his 14th start in a Dash uniform, Pilkington stifled the Mudcats bats. The former third-round pick held Carolina without a hit for the first four innings of the ballgame before giving up a single to Eddie Silva to start the fifth. Pilkington ended up allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out seven against two walks. Meanwhile, the Dash got off to a hot start offensively, scoring four runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Craig Dedelow and sacrifice flies from Carlos Perez and Jameson Fisher. In the second inning, Mitch Roman crushed a two-run homer to left.

VAUGHN PROMOTED TO THE DASH

Infielder Andrew Vaughn, who was picked by the Chicago White Sox out of the University of California-Berkeley with the third overall selection in the 2019 Draft, earned his first career promotion to High-A Winston-Salem, the White Sox announced on Wednesday. Prior to joining the White Sox system, Vaughn had an incredible career at Cal. As a sophomore in 2018, the first baseman won the Golden Spikes Award as the best amateur baseball player in the United States and the Pac-12 Player of the Year. Vaughn posted a .402/.531/.819 batting line, while hitting 23 home runs and striking out just 18 times. Vaughn is the highest drafted player in Cal history.

FIRST-ROUNDERS IN WINSTON

Since 2014, the Dash have had the White Sox first-round pick (or picks) in five out of the last six years, with the lone exception coming in 2017 when Jake Burger finished out his season with Low-A Kannapolis. Here is the full look over the years:

2014: LHP Carlos Rodon (3rd overall)

2015: RHP Carson Fulmer (8th overall)

2016: C Zack Collins (10th overall) and RHP Zack Burdi (26th overall)

2018: INF Nick Madrigal (4th overall)

2019: INF Andrew Vaughn (3rd overall)

A HOOSIER ON THE HILL

Right-hander Jonathan Stiever will make his eighth start with the Dash on Friday. Stiever has posted seven consecutive quality starts to begin his Dash tenure. Last time out, Stiever went six innings and allowed six hits and two runs at Lynchburg on July 26, all in a winning effort. Stiever's run dominant outings have prompted teammates to nickname him "Verlander", as an homage to eight-time All-Star Justin Verlander. A fifth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, Stiever was promoted to Winston-Salem from Low-A Kannapolis at the start of the second half. Before his time at Indiana, Stiever was a star football player at Cedarburg High School. In 2014, he was named the state Football Player of the Year in Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

THE GIVE AND TAKE OFFENSIVELY

The offense has been up and down for Winston-Salem in the second half. Over the first 42 games of the second half, Winston-Salem has scored just 164 runs, equating to about 3.9 runs per game. Despite some early offensive struggles to start the second half, the Dash are the only team in the Carolina League that is in the top three in batting average (3rd, .252), on-base percentage (2nd, .333) and slugging percentage (2nd, .385). Meanwhile, the Dash are third in homers (76).

NOT MUCH SEPARATION

Outside of three games, the Dash have only played contests where the margin of victory or defeat was less than four runs in the second half. Here is the breakdown of the Dash's record in those 39 games:

One-run games: 5-10

Two-run games: 6-5

Three-run games: 5-3

Four-run games: 3-2

MAN OF STEELE

Steele Walker, who joined the Dash in late April is 11-for-21 with a homer and four RBIs during the Dash's homestand. In 39 games since the All-Star Break, the former second-round pick is posting a .468 slugging percentage.
