DASH EARN RAIN-SHORTENED WIN

The Dash earned a rain-shortened win over Carolina in the bottom of the fifth on Tuesday at BB&T Ballpark. After Kyle Kubat retired Carolina in order in the top of the fifth, Winston-Salem jumped in front in the home half of frame as the drizzle became a downpour. After Zach Remillard walked to lead off the frame, Yeyson Yrizarri bunted for a hit up the first-base line, and Victor Diaz's throw flew wide of first base, allowing Remillard to reach third and Yrizarri to reach second base. Then, Luis Gonzalez hit a two-run double to put the Dash ahead. Before another pitch was thrown, the umpires signaled for the tarp to be put on the field. After a 27-minute delay, the game was called on account of heavy rain, resulting in a Dash win.

ANOTHER JULY HAS COME AND GONE

Despite dropping five out of their last seven games in the month of July, the Dash still posted a 16-12 record in the month. Offensively, Winston-Salem still ranks first in the Carolina League in hits (994), doubles (213) and RBIs (525). Meanwhile, the ballclub was tied for first in slugging percentage (.416) and ranked second in average (.273) and on-base percentage (.343). On the mound, the Dash ranked fourth in the circuit in July in ERA with a 3.67 mark.

STARS OF THE PREVIOUS MONTH

Winston-Salem had several offensive stars in the month of July:

C Yermin Mercedes: .341 AVG (28-for-82), 2 HRs, 16 RBIs, 7 2Bs

OF Blake Rutherford: .347 AVG (35-for-101), 12 RBIs, 11 BBs, 4 2Bs, 2 3Bs

INF Gavin Sheets: .308 (32-for-104), 8 2Bs, 14 RBIs, 11 BBs

THE BEST MERCEDES OUT THERE

A former Nationals and Orioles farmhand, Mercedes is now posting a .912 OPS after the All-Star Break. The 25-year-old was selected by the White Sox in the Minor League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December of 2017.

BANNER MONTH ON DEFENSE

After ranking among the worst clubs in the circuit on defense for most of the season, Winston-Salem put together its sharpest month of the year. With just 18 errors in the month of July, Winston-Salem ranks fourth in the circuit with a .975 fielding percentage. Gavin Sheets leads all Carolina League qualifiers at first base with a .994 mark, while Mercedes ranks second among catchers in caught stealing percentage with a .455 clip (30-for-66).

A FUN PLACE TO PLAY THE MUDCATS

The Dash continue their three-game set against the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday. The Dash are 7-1 against Carolina at the downtown facility this year, with a three-game sweep of the Muddies from June 1-3. Memorable moments from this matchup this year include Joel Booker's walk-off steal of home in Winston-Salem's series opener on April 12, star prospect Dylan Cease's first win as a White Sox farmhand on April 13, and a four-homer inning on April 14. The Dash are 12-6 against the Mudcats in 2018.

A FORMER COWBOY ON THE MOUND

Taking the mound for Winston-Salem in Wednesday's middle match is right-hander Blake Battenfield. The former 17th round pick by the White Sox in 2017 is coming off one of his toughest outings at the High-A level. On July 26 against Frederick, Battenfield allowed nine hits and six runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Since being promoted to Winston-Salem from Low-A Kannapolis at the start of the second half, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy is 3-2 with a 4.91 ERA in seven starts.

DASH DOTS

Dash alumni Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease were named the White Sox Minor League Player of the Month and Pitcher of the Month, respectively. Jimenez posted a 1.291 OPS in the month with Triple-A Charlotte, while Cease went 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA with Double-A Birmingham.
