LATE RALLY DOWNS DASH ON OPENING DAY

Trailing 5-2 in the eighth, the Muddies plated four runs off reliever Zach Thompson, with the last two being unearned. Jon Olczak locked down the save with a scoreless ninth. Dunning, who was making his eighth career start against the Mudcats, went five innings and allowed just three hits and one run while striking out eight.

SEVEN OF THE SOX TOP PROSPECTS

Of the top 15 prospects in the White Sox system according to MLB Pipeline, seven of them have been placed on Winston-Salem's Opening Day roster (six active and one on the DL). Outfielder Luis Robert will begin the season on the disabled list, but he highlights this septet as the third-best prospect. Right-hander Dylan Cease (fifth), Dunning (sixth), Rutherford (seventh), Adolfo (11th), Sheets (12th) and outfielder Luis Basabe (14th) round out this group.

HOUSE OF HORRORS

Five County Stadium continues to be a difficult place to play for Winston-Salem. After Carolina has now won 18 consecutive meetings against the Dash in Zebulon, N.C. Winston's last road win against the Mudcats was on August 3, 2016. That day, left-hander Tanner Banks threw eight innings of one-run ball as Winston-Salem pulled out a 3-1 victory over Carolina.

OMAR VIZQUEL TO MANAGE DASH

A three-time All-Star during his 24-year big league career, Omar Vizquel has replaced Willie Harris as the Dash's skipper for the 2018 season. An 11-time Gold Glove winner, Vizquel takes on his first managerial job in affiliated baseball. Widely considered one of the greatest defensive shortstops in MLB history, Vizquel played 2,968 games across six different MLB teams: Seattle Mariners (1989-1993), Cleveland Indians (1994-2004), San Francisco Giants (2005-08), Texas Rangers (2009), Chicago White Sox (2010-11) and Toronto Blue Jays (2012).

ANOTHER RETURNER TAKES THE HILL

Left-hander Bernardo Flores, who spent time in the Dash's rotation alongside Dunning in 2017, gets the ball against Carolina on Friday. Following an exceptional 14-game stint with Low-A Kannapolis, where he went 8-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 starts, Flores was bumped up to the High-A level on June 16. Despite going 2-3 with a 4.24 ERA in nine starts, the southpaw was starting to find his grove before being sidelined by an oblique injury in late August. Over his last five outings, Flores registered a 2-0 record with a 2.08 ERA.

DASH DOTS

Winston faced tonight's starter Trey Supak twice last year...The righty went 2-0 against the Dash with a 1.38 ERA (2ER in 13 IP)...Winston's 14 hits were tied for the most for the club on an Opening Day in the Dash era (2009-present), with the other occurrence taking place in 2016 at Lynchburg.
