Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will face the defending Grey Cup champions Edmonton Eskimos for the first time this season. The Bombers and Eskimos enter the contest with identical 2-3 records in the tight West Division standings. The Bombers are coming off an embarrassing 48-17 loss to the BC Lions, while the Eskimos are currently enjoying a two-game winning streak.
Tonight's game will feature many changes to the Bombers lineup. On offence the team will welcome back star receiver Robert "Flash" Gordon aka "Bobby Gorgeous". Gordon's return will give Bomber QB Khari Jones another explosive weapon.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bombers secondary will see a few new faces. Newly acquired halfback Jayson Bray will make his Bomber debut and receiver turned cornerback Markus Howell will man the corner position in place of the injured Eric Carter.
On the spot: The Bombers defence will truly be tested this game as they look to rebound after giving up 48 points last week to the BC Lions.
The Bomber secondary will have to play one of their best games as they hope to stop Edmonton's high powered receivers Derrell Mitchell, Terry Vaughn, Ed Hervey and Jason Tucker.
Keys to win: The Bombers offence must capitalize in the "red zone." The Bombers last week against BC were unable to convert scoring opportunities into touchdowns, settling instead for field goals.
Give the ball to Charles Roberts. The Bombers were a perfect 6-0 last season when "Blink" rushed for over 100 yards in a game.
Khari Jones will have his original quartet of receivers for the third time this season. Reggie Jones and Robert Gordon will man the outside and Milt "Turtle Man" Stegall and Kamau Peterson will be the inside targets. The regular receivers will give Jones all the targets he needs to complete passes.
Bomber leaders: Milt Stegall leads the team in receiving with 317 yards. Charles Roberts leads the rushing attack with 338 yards.
On defence, rookie defensive end Tom Canada leads the team with four quarterback sacks. The injured Eric Carter leads the team in defensive tackles with 20.
Special notes: Bomber kicker Troy Westwood was named the CFL's special teams player of the week. Westwood connected on all five of his field goal attempts against the Lions.
