Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Renegades are pleased to announce that defensive tackle Jerome Haywood has been named the Canadian Football League's lineman of the month.

Haywood, a three-year Ottawa veteran, was presented with the award Thursday – hours before the Renegades home game against the Calgary Stampeders.

Haywood, who had won the league's lineman of the week honour in back-to-back weeks last month for the first time in team history, has continued to be a dominant force on the Renegades' defensive line. The 5-foot-9, 280-pound Haywood has recorded 12 tackles and two quarterback sacks on the year – including a three-stop effort at Toronto last week. He made four tackles against the Montreal Alouettes on July 9 and had a solo tackle in each of the July 2 and July 16 Renegades home games. He is also second in the team in sacks (2) and has made one tackle for loss.

"He out-muscled some excellent offensive linemen and was able to control that important ‘point of attack'," said league judge Ellison Kelly, who awarded Haywood with the honour. "At times he was like a human wrecking ball knocking people aside and controlling two gaps. Each week, his game was about awesome power and quickness."

Kelly also mentioned: "no one has blocked (Haywood) effectively one on one."

Haywood, 26, was given the nod as lineman of the month ahead of Montreal's Ed Philion (first runner-up) and Scott Schultz of the Saskatchewan Roughriders (second runner-up).
