CFL Canadian Football League

CFL tabs players of the month

July 29, 2004 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Month

QB - Anthony Calvillo #13

Montreal Alouettes

Highlights

Calvillo was the Rogers CFL Offensive Player of the Week for week six; he has been outstanding in every game since the start of the season.

Game Notes:

Calvillo does an excellent job of reading coverage and finding that second or third option. He comes across as being in total control of the offence and plays smart competitive football, game after game.

1st Runner Up: Casey Printers #1, BC Lions

2nd Runner Up: Ben Cahoon #86, Montreal

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Defensive Player of the month

DB - Almondo Curry #22

Montreal Alouettes

Highlights

Curry demonstrates outstanding defensive backfield play, especially during week 5.

Game Notes:

It was a tough choice between Curry and the Argos' Michael Fletcher. They both played outstanding football, but I gave the call to Curry. He played tough intimidating football and was a main part of the Als smothering defensive backfield. His play was physical but he also showed his ability to press and run with receivers.

1st Runner Up: Michael Fletcher #2, Toronto Argonauts

2nd Runner Up: George White #38, Calgary Stampeders

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Lineman of the month

DL - Jerome Haywood #99

Ottawa Renegades

Highlights

Haywood was our lineman of the week for week 1&2. No one has blocked him effectively one on one.

Game Notes:

He out-muscled some excellent offensive linemen and was able to control that important ‘point of attack.' At times he was like a human wrecking ball knocking people aside and controlling two gaps. Each week, his game was about awesome power and quickness.

1st Runner Up: Ed Philion #75, Montreal Alouettes

2nd Runner Up: Scott Schultz #96, Saskatchewan Roughriders

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Special Teams Player of the month

KR - Bashir Levingston #23

Toronto Argonauts

Highlights

Outstanding kick returns in weeks 1&2.

Game Notes:

Levingston is still a work in progress. The pursuit appears to be for more consistency. He had two exceptional games returning kicks and others that were so, so. His overall efforts, however, earned him monthly honours. His ability to accelerate and his overall speed made him an elusive target.

1st Runner Up: Winston October #9, Edmonton Eskimos

2nd Runner Up: Keith Stokes #3, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Judge: Ellison Kelly
