Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Monarchs Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Manchester Monarchs, are continuing their partnership with the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and the Foundation for Healthy Communities to teach children the importance of eating healthy and staying fit with the Winning With Wellness program. Last year, the program interacted with over 1,200 students.
The Winning With Wellness program will be visiting schools throughout New Hampshire sharing their message with third, fourth and fifth graders. The program will feature two Monarchs players talking with students and teaching them the 5-2-1-0 Healthy NH guidelines.
5 - Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
2 - Cut back watching television and playing video games to two hours or less a day.
1 - Participate in at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.
0 - Restrict soda and sugar-sweetened sports and fruit drinks. Instead, drink water and 3-4 servings of fat-free, skim or 1% milk per day.
In addition, an interactive video is shown to the students with additional players talking about eating and exercising.
"We are proud to be able to continue this partnership and bring awareness to students with the 5-2-1-0 program through Winning With Wellness," said Monarchs Senior Vice President Cheryl Abbott. "We are able to utilize our players as role models to assist children in learning how to lead a healthier lifestyle through Winning With Wellness."
"We're happy to be partnering with the Manchester Monarchs in this initiative, as it is our goal to demonstrate to all children that eating well and exercising can be fun and educational at the same time," added Executive Director of the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation Karen Voci. "The support of great local organizations like the Monarchs and the Foundation for Healthy Communities helps us to spread the word about the importance of nutrition and overall health, and that it should start at a young age and continue through adulthood."
The students will not only walk away with the knowledge of leading a healthy lifestyle but will also be given a complimentary ticket voucher to an upcoming Monarchs game, a goal tracker handout to show their progress of eating and exercising, as well as a jump rope.
