Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The historic winning streak for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans was stopped at 12 as the Augusta GreenJackets took down the winningest team in Minor League Baseball 5-3 on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Pelicans fell to 32-12 on the season while the GreenJackets improve to .500 at 22-22. It was Augusta's first win of the series after Myrtle Beach took the first four games.
The top half of the order for the Pelicans had a great day as Pete Crow-Armstrong (2-4), James Triantos (2-4, 2 R), and Kevin Alcantara (2-4) all logged multi-hit performances from the top three spots. BJ Murray (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) brought home most of the runs with an RBI single and double. Kevin Made (1-4, RBI, R) also brought in a run for the visitors.
Richard Gallardo (4-2) took the loss after lasting just over five innings with four earned runs off six hits and one walk while racking up five strikeouts. Jarod Wright came out of the bullpen and allowed just one earned run off one hit in his 2 2/3 innings with a walk and a strikeout.
Augusta turned seven hits into five runs with Geraldo Quintero (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) leading the charge from the three spot in the lineup. Leadoff hitter Caleb Durbin (1-2, RBI, R) also brought in a run for the GreenJackets' first win of the week.
It was a solid day on the mound for the GreenJackets' arms as Tyler Owens (3-0) took the win in relief with two earned runs off three hits in his 2 1/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Starter JJ Niekro had a great day with seven strikeouts and one earned run off seven hits through his 5 2/2 frames. Juan Mateo took the save with two strikeouts in the final inning.
A scoreless game lasted until the fourth inning when Quintero led off with a solo home run to right field on the first pitch of the inning from Gallardo. The GreenJackets went up 1-0 on Quintero's fourth homer of the season.
Myrtle Beach evened things up in the sixth as Triantos and Alcantara hit back-to-back singles with one out. Made followed by grounding into a forceout at second to put runners on the corners. Murray cashed in with a single to right to score Triantos and tie the game 1-1.
The bottom of the sixth inning was the difference as Augusta plated three to take the lead back. Durbin and Cal Conley both led off with singles and Quintero followed with a single to center to score Durbin as Quintero advanced to second. Brandon Parker stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Conley as Quintero reached third. Adam Zebrowski lined a single to right to score the third run of the inning as Augusta went on top 4-1.
An insurance run came home for the GreenJackets in the bottom of the seventh as Mahki Backstrom walked and Kadon Morton singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Durbin hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Backstrom from third, but Morton was tagged out at second after the throw came home to end the inning.
Myrtle Beach put together a late rally with two runs in the top of the eighth. Triantos picked up his second hit of the night with a single with one out and moved to second on Alcantara's groundout. Made smacked a single to right to score Triantos and get the Birds within three. Made came home as Murray hit a double into the corner in right field to make it 5-3 Augusta.
The series will conclude on Sunday with the Pelicans holding a four-game to one lead. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
