CHARLESTON, S.C. - A scoreless battle was flipped on its head by an eight-run fifth inning as the Delmarva Shorebirds lost 8-3 to the Charleston RiverDogs on Saturday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark.
Dan Hammer for the Shorebirds (15-29) and Ben Peoples for the RiverDogs (31-13) stymied opposing hitters through the first four innings with the game scoreless heading into the fifth.
The fifth inning barrage for the RiverDogs began with a two-run homer for Luis Leon, his third homer of the season. After the RiverDogs chased Hammer from the game, Carson Williams unleashed a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, to make it 5-0. Charleston piled it on with an RBI double for Bobby Seymour, RBI single for Oneill Manzueta, and a run scoring wild pitch to make it 8-0.
The Shorebirds tried to light a spark in the sixth. Trendon Craig blasted a three-run homer to right, his first of the season, to make it 8-3, but the 'Birds bats were silenced the rest of the way.
Jonny Cuevas (1-0) collects the win in relief for Charleston. He went three innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk, striking out one.
Hammer (2-3) suffered the loss for Delmarva, going four-plus innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks, striking out four.
The Shorebirds wrap up their series with the RiverDogs on Sunday, May 29. Conor Grady (2-3, 6.28) is scheduled to go for Delmarva against JJ Goss (0-1, 3.13) for Charleston. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark is slated for 5:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 4:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
