Winning Streak Ends at Eight as Rox Can't Solve Jackals

Brockton, Mass - Rox 3B Philip Cuadrado went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI, but it wasn't enough as Brockton fell to the New Jersey Jackals, 11-5, in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Thursday evening, putting an end to the Rox eight-game winning strewak.
The Jackals (12-14) roughed up Rox starter Buster Lussier to the tune of four runs in the first inning, courtesy of an RBI single by LF Jacob Butler, a two-run home run by DH Shawn Riggans, and 3B Abraham Nunez's run-scoring double.
Brockton (15-10) halved the New Jersey lead in their half of the first on Cuadrado's two-out, two-run homer, and then tied the game at four in the third on another two-run blast from Cuadrado.
The lead was quickly regained by the Jackals in the top of the fourth on 1B Jabe Bergeron's solo blast to lead off the inning. The score stayed at 5-4 until the seventh, when C Jordan Newton drove in RF Kevin Clark with an RBI single. Brockton cut the lead back to one, 6-5, on 2B Scott Wearne's run-scoring groundout in the eighth, but the Jackals put the game away with a five-run ninth inning that included another RBI single from Butler.
DH Clyde Williams was the only Rox player besides Cuadrado with more than one hit on the night, going 2-for-4. Nunez led the way for New Jersey with a 3-for-5 evening, while 2B Argenis Reyes, Butler and CF Jeff Grose each had a pair of hits.
Lussier picked up his first loss of the season, giving up six runs on nine hits in six and one-third innings of work. Isaac Pavlik (2-1) earned the victory, throwing five frames and allowing four runs on five hits.
The two teams meet for the second of the four-game set tomorrow, with New Jersey's A.J. Wideman (3-2) facing last week's Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week, Mike Wlodarczyk (3-1) at 7:05 p.m.
