New Jersey Jackals News Release
Brockton, MA - In a game that featured four home runs, the New Jersey Jackals outslugged the Brockton Rox to earn an 11-5 win on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium. The New Jersey win halted second-place Brockton's eight-game winning streak.
After rain delayed first pitch 23 minutes, the Jackals erupted for four runs in the top of the first against Brockton starter Buster Lussier. A two-out RBI single by left fielder Jacob Butler plated second baseman Argenis Reyes with the game's first run. The next batter, designated hitter Shawn Riggans, laced a two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole. Riggans' fourth of the season made it 3-0 New Jersey before back-to-back doubles by shortstop Mike DeJesus and third baseman Abraham Nunez extended the Jackals' lead to 4-0.
Brockton retaliated in the bottom of the first against Isaac Pavlik, who rejoined the Jackals' rotation after beginning the season in the bullpen. Brockton third baseman Phillip Cuadrado launched a two-run homer to left after a two-out walk by designated hitter Keith Brachold to pull the Rox within two at 4-2. In the bottom of the third, Cuadrado connected on his second two-run shot of the evening, this time to right center, to even the score at four.
From there, Pavlik retired the next nine batters he faced as first baseman Jabe Bergeron broke the 4-4 deadlock with a leadoff blast in the top of the fourth. In the seventh, an RBI infield single off the bat of catcher Jordan Newton made it 6-4 Jackals.
The Rox plated a run against reliever Mike Pontius in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one before advancing the potential tying run to third with two outs, but Pontius escaped the jam to maintain the 6-5 lead.
In the top of the ninth, New Jersey plated five runs against former Jackal Hunter Davis to cap the scoring and put the game out of reach.
In his second start of the season, Pavlik (2-1) allowed four runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout over five frames to earn the win. Lussier (1-1) took the loss after surrendering six runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out six. Pontius stayed on in the ninth and retired the Rox in order to earn his first save of the season. New Jersey lefty Edgar Estanga contributed two scoreless innings in relief as well.
The Jackals (12-14) and Rox (15-10) play the second contest of their four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium when New Jersey sends southpaw A.J. Wideman (3-2, 3.21 ERA) to the mound against Brockton left-hander Mike Wlodarczyk (3-1, 4.13 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
