Wings reliever Lester Oliveros made the spot start Sunday, his third of the season. The RailRiders took the early 1-0 lead after a lead-off double by Mason Williams and an RBI single by Rob Refsnyder. Oliveros struck out Nick Noonan with the bases loaded to limit the scoring to one run.
Scranton starter Jose DePaula was making just his second appearance, after opening the season on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. DePaula went five innings in his first outing June 2, and used just 12 pitches to set down the Wings in the first inning Sunday.
Oliveros gave up two hits with two outs in the top of the second but stranded the runners on first and third. The Wings were put away in order by DePaula and the Scranton defense, leaving the score 1-0 Scranton going into the third inning.
After a quick inning for the Wings defense, Jose Martinez led off the bottom of the third with a double to left-center field. Martinez scored easily from second base on an RBI double off the bat of Eric Farris to right field, tying the game 1-1.
Two stellar defensive plays by the Wings left the RailRaiders scoreless in the top of the fourth. Shortstop Argenis Diaz caught Jonathon Galvez at third base on a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Only a few pitches later, catcher Eric Fryer caught Taylor Dugas stealing second to close out the inning.
Alex Meyer relieved Oliveros in the top of the fifth and gave up one hit to Williams, who went 3-for-5 on the day. As the Wings were unable to get anything going in the bottom of the fifth against DePaula, the game was knotted at one going into the sixth.
Oliveros' line: four innings pitched with six hits, an earned run and a walk allowed, with three strikeouts. He threw 78 pitches, 51 for strikes.
As play went to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wings had managed just two hits and walk against DePaula - then went down in order in the sixth, despite two hard-hit balls that turned into nice defensive plays and outs. When DePaula retired the side again the seventh, he had set down 11 straight Wings at that point.
Meyer allowed a hit and a walk in three relief innings, striking out one. A.J. Achter took over to start the eighth inning, and Rob Refsnyder lined an 0-1 pitch for a home run just over the wall in left field. It was just the second run Achter has allowed since May 19 (also a home run). Austin Romine follwed Refsnyder with another homer to left, putting the RailRiders ahead 3-1.
Danny Burawa took over for DePaula in the bottom of the eighth. DePaula held the Wings to two hits and an earned run, walking one and striking out four. DePaula threw 82 pitches, 56 for strikes.
Fryer greeted Burawa with a ground rule double to open the Wings' half of the eighth inning, then the Wings caught a break with pinch-hitter James Beresford at the plate. Beresford struck out on a wild pitch, with Fryer moving up to third and Beresford reaching first safely. Bernier grounded into a double play, but Fryer scored to pull the Wings within a run at 3-2.
Caleb Thielbar (4-2) worked a scoreless ninth inning for Rochester, then the Wings their bid to win. Branden Pinder came on to face the Wings in the bottom of the ninth, and Danny Ortiz led off with a pinch-hit single. Reynaldo Rodriguez followed with a single, but Pinto flew out to right. Kennys Vargas worked Pinder (0-1) for a walk, loading the bases with one out. That's when Oswaldo Arcia lifted a long fly ball to the warning track in right field. Ortiz scored the tying run, but Rodriguez and Vargas both tagged up on the play. Shortstop Noonan took the relay from right and threw to third, in an attempt to nab Rodriguez - but Noonan's throw was wild, and Rodriguez popped up and hustled home to score the winning run on a headfirst slide.
