Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Today the RailRiders have a chance to grab sole possession of first place for the first time in the RailRiders era. The franchise last owned the penthouse by itself when the then-SWB Yankees won the division without a home stadium in 2012. That squad clinched the crown in its last "home" game of the year with a 5-0 defeat of Lehigh Valley at Rochester's Frontier Field. The RailRiders' home of PNC Field in Moosic, Pa. was undergoing a season-long reconstruction, forcing the team to play "home" games at six other stadiums. The majority of those games were played at Frontier Field.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A tightrope walk led to a familiar destination as the RailRiders topped the first-place Red Wings on Saturday night, 2-1. SWB won its 10th straight road game and drew within a half-game of Rochester in the IL North.
ONE-RUN FUN: The RailRiders improved to an IL-best 13-5 in one-run games including wins in 10 of their last 12 single-score contests. Rochester and Buffalo (7-13) stand tied for the loop's worst record in one-run affairs.
LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel bashed the game's lone extra-base hit, his team-leading sixth triple. He has more triples than three IL teams (Norfolk & Pawtucket 5; Lehigh Valley 4).
ROAD WARRIORS: SWB had not won 10 consecutive road games since taking its first 10 in 2009. The 10th triumph in that run was a 17-14 game that took 13 innings and 4:43 at Rochester on April 25. The Red Wings then snapped the streak with a 7-3 win on April 26. All seven runs scored in the opening inning. No Yankees-affiliated SWB team has won more than 10 straight on the road.
FIVE ALIVE: The RailRiders stand five games above .500 for the first time since the 2013 squad was 20-15 after a 7-6 loss at Gwinnett on May 12.
HIGH FIVE: NEPA's team has won a season-high-tying five in a row overall. It last did so from May 14-18 when it swept Durham in four games on the road and took a home affair from Charlotte.
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: The RailRiders stand five games below .500 at PNC Field (14-19) and 10 games over on the road (17-7). The team has hit .282 on the road compared to a .246 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 127 runs in 24 games (5.3/game). At home, the squad has plated 111 runs in 33 games (3.4/game). The pitching has performed slightly better at home (3.39 ERA) than outside of Moosic (3.48). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.708) and no IL squad has more home losses than SWB (19).
RED WINGING IT: The RailRiders have lost 10 of their last 12 games at Rochester's home, Frontier Field. That hurt the team en route to a 5-11 performance against the Red Wings last season. The SWB franchise had not logged a losing season against Rochester since the 2007 unit also went 5-11. The RailRiders have lost 17 of their last 23 against the Red Wings going back to 2013.
OFF THE RAILS: SWB stands to 26-1 when leading after eight innings...Starter Kyle Davies improved to 4-0 in five road games (four starts)...He is 0-3 in five nods at PNC Field...Nick Noonan went 3-for-4 with the team's only RBI...Rochester went 1-for-5 with men in scoring position and stranded 10 men on base...All eight Red Wings' hits were singles...The game-time temperature was 63 degrees with 11 mph winds. The thermometer dipped to 55 before the game's end...The fireworks gathering of 10,901 marked the biggest crowd to see a 2015 RailRiders game...SWB struck out a season-high 14 times.
