The Springfield Jr. Blues survived a determined comeback attempt by the Johnstown Tomahawks on the way to a 3-2 win.
Springfield made the score 3-0 on a goal by Micah Ranum at 13:11 in the second period, and Johnstown got as close as 3-2 when Mitch Kontny scored 2:32 into the third period.
The 38 shots that the Jr. Blues put on net surpassed Springfield's average of 23.4 shots per game this season.
The Jr. Blues were helped by Tom Cooney, who racked up one goal. Cooney scored 15:20 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Springfield. Jack Sloan picked up the assist. Brett Skibba also scored for Springfield. In addition, Springfield received assists from Jeff McFarland and Ryan Atkinson, who each chipped in one.
The Tomahawks relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Kontny, Jordan Watt and Jeff Bergh took 13 of the team's 25 shots. Johnstown's defensemen bolstered the Tomahawks' offensive attack, as they bombarded Ryan Kellenberger with 11 shots.
More assists for Johnstown came via Casey Nelson, who had two.
Kellenberger recorded 23 saves for Springfield. The Jr. Blues incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Johnstown's starting goalie, Collin Brennan, made 22 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Chris Truehl, who stopped 13 shots. The Tomahawks incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
