Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings and the Soo Eagles entered Saturday's contest just one point apart in the NAHL North Division standings. Kalamazoo was looking to take sole possession of first place for the first time this season, but Tyler Marble would not let Soo lost their lead. Although Kalamazoo outshot Soo by 10, Marble only let one puck get past him, and the Soo Eagles were victorious by the score of 3-1.
Neither team was able to score on their first power play opportunity, but Soo capitalized on the man advantage the second time around. Just 16 seconds after Christian George was called for slashing, Alex Robert (4th) snuck one into the back of the net at 14:32. This gave Soo the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period was fast-paced and hard-hitting, but it did not result in a goal. Kalamazoo had two power play opportunities, but failed to score. That made them 0 for 4 on the game with an extra man.
Early in the third, another goal would be put on the board. Again, it was the Eagles from Soo that notched a goal on the power play. This time, Sean Murphy (11th) drove it home and extended the lead over the Jr. K-Wings to 2-0.
Kalamazoo had failed to get one past Marble throughout the third period, including over a minute where they played 5 on 3, but they eventually broke through at 18:45. Kalamazoo had an extra attacker and Mike Fazio (5th) took advantage of a rebound opportunity to cut the deficit to one.
The Jr. K-Wings continued to skate with the empty net, and had a few chances, but were unable to score again. Soo's victory was sealed with just five seconds left when Murphy (12th) scored the empty net goal to give Soo the 3-1 win.
The Eagles' victory of the Jr. K-Wings was their fifth of the season, and it ended the Jr. K-Wings' 15 game point streak. Before Saturday, Kalamazoo had not lost in regulation since January 5th, when they again fell to Soo.
