Kalamazoo ends season with 2-1 loss

April 17, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- In a game that required a Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wing win to keep the best of five North Division Semifinal alive, it would be the Jamestown Ironmen who would outlast their opponent on their way to a 2-1 victory and three game sweep on Wednesday night at the Borgess Health Rink inside Wings West.

It was no surprise to see Kalamazoo and Jamestown fly around the ice in the first at frantic speeds, delivering hard hits, and numerous scoring chances. The previous ten games during the regular season and playoffs between the teams set an obvious tone for the opening twenty.

Both teams were steady in the first, but it was Jamestown who was able to break the scoreless tie in the opening frame. Ryan Doucet (3rd) got a feed from Luc Gerdes, and was able to beat Kalamazoo goalie Marcus Due-Boje over the shoulder to give the Ironmen 1-0 edge.

For the second straight period, it was speed that was showcased more than anything between these two teams. The Ironmen were able to produce nine shots on goal, but all were turned away by Due-Boje, who had registered 24 saves in 40 minutes. Across the ice, Jamestown goalie, Joe Ballmer was flawless for the second straight period, stopping eight shots for a forty-minute total of 17.

15 minutes had elapsed in the third period with Kalamazoo scratching and clawing just to maintain pressure on the Ironmen. Their efforts finally paid dividends, as Mac McDonnell (5th)was able to tie the game at 1-1 with his top-shelf short side goal on Ballmer.

The Ironmen were able to take the ensuing faceoff down the ice, and in just nine seconds, Gerdes dished to Evan Ritt, as he raised the puck past the glove hand of Due-Boje for the eventual game winning goal and his second of the post season.

It gave Jamestown a 3-0 sweep in the best of five series, as they will head on to the North Divisional Finals to face the winner of the Soo Eagles and the Port Huron Fighting Falcons.
