'Wings plate double-digits in victory

Edinburg, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings (11-17) jumped out to an 11-0 lead after an inning and a half and never looked back, beating the Edinburg Coyotes (10-17) 14-6 tonight at Edinburg Stadium.

The WhiteWings got things going with two outs in the first against John Maschino (0-2). Areglis Nunez and Ryan Fox drew six-pitch walks and Brian Nichols hit an RBI-single. David Fowler follwed with his fourth home run of the season, making it 4-0.

The WhiteWings blew it open in the second by scoring seven runs (two earned) on three hits while sending 11 batters to the plate. With one out out, Amadeo Zazueta reached on an error. Bub Bergstrom walked and Kevin Griffin hit an RBI-single. Nunez walked to load the bases and Fox drew a walk to drive in Bergstrom. One out later, Fowler was hit by a pitch to drive in Griffin and knock out Maschino. Bryan Heaston came in and gave up a bases-clearing triple to Terry Roblez and an RBI-double to David Cardona before getting out of the inning down 11-0.

The Coyotes got on the board in the second against Angel Cordero (1-0) when Daryl Jones led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch.

Bric Steed drew a leadoff walk in the third and later scored on a two-out home run by Mayobanex Santana to make it 11-3.

Eric Gonzalez led off the fourth with a walk, stole second, and later scored on a single by Eddie Wilson to make it 11-4.

Daryl Jones hit a solo home run with two outs in the fifth to make it 11-5.

The WhiteWings answered in the seventh when Fowler singled and Roblez was hit by a pitch. Cardona grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Fowler. Zazueta followed with an RBI-single and then Bergstrom walked. Griffin grounded into a fielder's choice to score Cardona, and then after Nunez walked to loaded the bases, Fox reached on an error to score Zazueta, making it 14-5.

That did not deter the Coyotes, who got a two-out run in the seventh when Gonzlaez reached on an infield single and scored on a Logan Wood triple to make it 14-6.

The WhiteWings and Coyotes play game two of this three-game set tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Kenny Evoniuk (0-3) will face right-hander Aaron Guerra (2-0).
