Broncos let late-inning lead slip away

Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos gave up a 2 run home run in the top of the 9th against the Alexandria Aces, as they fell by a score of 5-4 Wednesday night at Veterans Field. The Broncos continue on this short 3 game series against the Aces on Thursday night. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The Broncos got the scoring going in the bottom of the 2nd inning. With two outs Arnoldo Ponce doubled. Then Ben Tinius came up making his 2008 Broncos debut and hit an rbi single scoring Ponce and giving Laredo a 1-0 lead.

The Broncos would tack on another run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Matt Lawman walked to lead off the inning and then went to 2nd base on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Padilla. Dwayne White would then ground out to the 2nd baseman allowing Lawman to go to 3rd base. Then with Luany Sanchez batting Aces starter Alexis Sosa threw a wild pitch allowing Lawman to score and giving the Broncos a 2-0 lead.

Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez was rolling along till the top of the 6th inning. With one out Palmer Karr Jr. hit a fly ball to Dwayne White in left field that he dropped allowing Karr Jr. to get to 2nd base. The next hitter Luis Guance would then walk. Then with two outs Bryan Sabatella singled scoring Karr Jr. and advancing Guance to 3rd. Then Jose Umbria would single scoring Guance and moving Sabatella to 2nd base. Robert Matlock who pinched hit for 2nd baseman Homy Ovalles, hit an infield single loading the bases. Blake Butler would then strike out, but the ball would get by catcher Josh Morrison for a dropped 3rd strike, which allowed Sabatella to score and give the Aces a 3-2 lead.

Martinez would be done after that going 6 innings giving up 3 runs all unearned on 6 hits. He would walk 2 batters and strike out 7.

The Broncos would get Martinez off the hook in the bottom of the 6th inning. Edgard Clemente would single to start off the inning. Santiago Guerrero would reach base on an error by Alexandria's shortstop Tyler Farrar who came into the game as a defensive replacement, threw wide to 2nd base allowing Clemente to be safe. Then Arnoldo Ponce would hit a bunt single loading the bases. With Ben Tinius batting Aces starter Alexis Sosa uncorked a wild pitch. That would score Clemente and tie the game up at 3 after 6 innings.

The Broncos would retake the lead in the bottom of the 7th. With one out Dwayne White doubled and then went to 3rd on a single by Luany Sanchez. Sanchez would then advance to 2nd on a passed ball. The Aces would then intentionally walk Edgard Clemente to load the bases. Santiago Guerrero would then hit a sacrifice fly scoring White and giving the Broncos the lead 4-3.

Broncos reliever Dan Sausville pitched a scoreless 7th inning and was the pitcher of record for the Broncos. Rusty Jones would also pitch a scoreless 8th inning giving the Broncos the lead going into the 9th inning. John Smith would come in for the Broncos to attempt to save the game. He walked the leadoff man Selwyn Langaigne. Smith would get the next two men out, but would give up a 2 run home run to Luis Guance his 5th of the season as the Aces took a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the 9th inning.

The Broncos would threaten in the 9th inning. With one out Dwayne White singled and Luany Sanchez walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Charlie Foster who was in for the Aces was taken out for closer Juan Ovalles. Ovalles threw 2 pitches and got Edgard Clemente to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game giving the Aces the victory 5-4

The Broncos scored 4 runs on 10 hits and committed 2 errors, while the Aces scored 5 runs on 7 hits and committed 1 error.

The Broncos now fall under .500 with a 13-14 record on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on Thursday night in Laredo for the 2nd game of a 3 game series with the Alexandria Aces at 7:35 at Veterans Field.
