San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts announced today that they have signed RHP Julio Freites and released RHP Chris Weast.
Freites, 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the New York Mets in May of 2000 and he began his first of three seasons with Universidad of the Venezuelan Summer League that year. In 2002, the right-hander was moved to Kingsport (Rookie) of the Appalachian League, where he also played in 2003 and 2004. Toward the end of the 2004 season, he advanced to Short-Season Single-A, playing with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, where he was 1-0 with a 3.78 ERA in nine relief appearances. After not playing in 2005 and 2006, he resumed his career in 2007 with El Paso of the American Association, where he was 0-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 21 relief appearances.
Weast was signed by the Colts in the off-season but was traded to the Alexandria Aces along with a player to be named later for LHP Frank James on April 9. The Star City, Arkansas native went to Training Camp with the Aces but was released before the season began. The Colts signed him again on May 30, and he went 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in two relief appearances with San Angelo. The 23-year-old finished his college career in 2007 with Delta State University, a Division-II school located in Cleveland Mississippi.
The second-place Colts continue this nine-game homestand with the series opener of a three-game set against the first place Amarillo Dillas at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11. Sport Clips will be at Foster Field providing haircuts for fans at the park for $5 each, with all proceeds going to charity.
