'Wings Fly South in Bottom of Ninth, Lose 7-6

June 26, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

With a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, the league leader in saves, Edgar Martinez, allowed the tying and eventually game-winning run to cross the plate as the 'Wings fell to the San Angelo Colts 7-6.

It's the first blown save and loss for Martinez, who earlier this year seemed unhittable as he had a microscopic .66 ERA with 24 strikeouts through 13.2 innings coming into tonight.

Tied 5-5 in the top of the ninth inning, Anton DeJesus knocked in what was the go-ahead RBI as his base hit allowed Francisco Santana to cross home plate and give the WhiteWings a 6-5 lead.

To close out the game, manager Eddie Dennis brought out Martinez.

Allowing a single and double in his first two batters faced, Martinez was in an immediate jam. After intentionally loading the bases, Danny Hernandez lined a shot down the right field line to score the tying run to make the score 6-6.

One batter later, Davis Page grounded to shortstop. The 'Wings tried to turn the inning-ending double play, going from second to first, but Page was safe at first while the winning run crossed the plate.

The loss drops the 'Wings to 16-14 on the year while San Angelo advances to 17-13 to take over sole possession over first place.

Martinez gets pegged with the loss and blown save, both firsts on the year for the closer while Francisco Cruceta gets credited with the win.

The WhiteWings will try to even up the series against San Angelo on Monday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Alexander Concepcion, who recorded 16 strikeouts in six innings against San Angelo in his last appearance, is scheduled to take the mound.

Fans can catch all the action live on 956sports.com as the 'Wings try to take back first place.
