Two Four-Run Innings Not Enough

Giving up 18 hits the Calgary Vipers (18-14) were defeated 11-8 by the Strong Warriors of Maui (12-15) at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Twice in the game Calgary scored four runs in an inning but on both occasions Maui answered in the next half inning with four runs of their own. The Vipers did not score in any other innings while the Strong Warriors plated one in the first and two in the fourth for the difference.

Shawn Hetherington (1-1) picked up the loss out of the bullpen after giving up three runs in an inning and a third. Ryan Page (1-1) recorded the win by lasting five innings and giving up ten hits and eight runs. Rusty Jones (2) earned the save with two scoreless innings while for Calgary Dan Morari was excellent in striking out four in his two innings of work.

At the plate Calgary had 12 hits with Jimmy Rohan, Justin Tellam, and Wilver Perez all recording three each while three position players went hitless.

Maui opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning as Steve Boggs singled, Gered Mochizuki reached on a fielder's choice after a double-play throw was off line, Mochizuki advanced to third base on a throwing error, and scored when the throw to third hit him and got away for a 1-0 lead.

Calgary responded in the second frame when Louie Templeton walked, Justin Tellam doubled, Jimmy Rohan singled in a run, Aaron Dunsmore knocked in one with a fielder's choice, Edward Valdez laid down a sacrifice bunt, with two outs Jonny Kaplan walked, Bryan Burke was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Wilver Perez knocked in two with a single for a 4-1 advantage.

The Strong Warriors matched that four-run inning with one of their own in their next at-bats as J.J. Sherrill walked, Jowen Murray-Thornton doubled, with two ours Stephan Pearson doubled home two, Steven Garcia singled, and both Richard Bargwell and Ryan Page drove in a run each with base hits for a 5-4 lead.

Maui added to the lead in the fourth when Mochizuki and Sherrill singled, Mochizuki scored on a balk, and Jose Sanchez drove in a run with a base hit for a 7-4 advantage.

The Vipers put up their second four-run inning in the bottom of the frame as Kaplan homered for a third time this season, Burke walked, Perez singled, with two outs Tellam singled in a run, and Rohan doubled home two for a 8-7 lead.

For a second time the Strong Warriors matched a four-run frame with one of their own in the next at-bats when Bargwell was hit by a pitch, Page laid down a sacrifice bunt, Boggs singled in one, Sherrill hit a two-run home run, and Murray-Thornton made it back-to-back shots for an 11-8 advantage.

On Toonie Tuesday June 28th at 6:30 the Vipers will host Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions for 80s Night. Canseco will be available to the media before the game at 4:00. The two teams will also play on Weiner Wednesday June 29th at 6:30 for $5.00 Student Night, on Thursday June 30th at 7:30 for FIREWORKS, on Canada Day Friday July 1st at 1:05 for Baseball Bonanza, and on Saturday July 2nd at 5:05.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
