
Wingnuts Win Twelfth Straight

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts (40-18) set a franchise record with a 12 consecutive win, beating the Sioux City Explorers (23-34) 12-5 at Lewis and Clark Park on Tuesday night.
With two outs and no one on base in the top of the first inning, John Rodriguez singled through the right side. C.J. Ziegler followed with a two-run home run to left-center field that just cleared the fence.
Abel Nieves lined a single to center leading off the second and advanced to second two batters later when Colt Loehrs drew a walk. Jared McDonald made it 3-0 with a line drive single to center that scored Nieves. After Ryan Khoury lined out to right field, Jake Kahaulelio sliced a double inside the right field line to score two more runs.
With two outs and no one on base in the top of the fourth the Wingnuts loaded the bases on a Kahaulelio single and back-to-back walks to Rodriguez and Ziegler. Brent Clevlen was hit by a pitch to force home Wichita's sixth run of the game.
Sioux City scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead in half. Adrian Martinez hit a two-run home run to left field, while Bryan Pounds added a two-out, RBI double to center later in the inning.
Wichita answered back with four runs in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Loehrs and McDonald hit back-to-back RBI singles to stretch the lead to 8-3. Khoury forced home another run with a bases loaded walk. Loehrs scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Alberto Espinosa singled home a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 10-4. Gilbert Briones followed with a bases loaded walk.
Cole Armstrong lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to increase Wichita's lead to 11-5. Ziegler added a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to provide the game's final margin.
Ryan Scoles earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Scoles walked one and struck out two.
Andy Noga took the loss for the Explorers, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in three and two-thirds innings. Noga walked four and struck out three.
All nine of Wichita's starters reached base at least once, while eight collected at least one hit. Josh Stone, Lincoln Holdzkom, and Andrew Aizenstadt each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Kahaulelio and Nieves each had three hits.
The Wingnuts return home on Thursday, July 18th when they open a four-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs. Justin Klipp is scheduled to start for the Wingnuts.
