Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (36-27) beat the Amarillo Sox (35-28) 6-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.
Steve Carrillo scored the winning run from second base in the bottom of the ninth on an infield single from Mike Conroy. Tied at 5-5, Carrillo was struck out by Sox' reliever Chad Povich leading off, but reached first base on a throwing error by catcher Mitch Abeita. Jared McDonald sacrificed Carrillo to second. After Ryan Khoury flied out to right field, Conroy hit a groundball that deflected off Povich and caromed to second base. Carrillo rounded third on the play and slid home under Abeita's tag with the winning run.
The Sox jumped on the board first with two runs in the top of the second. Abeita led off with a triple to right-center, and scored on Chuck Lofgren's triple to right field. Two batters later, Derrick Pyles lined a single to center to drive in Lofgren.
Wichita answered back in the bottom of the third. Carrillo was hit by a pitch leading off and advanced to second two batters later when Khoury ripped a single to left. Conroy drilled a three-run home run to right field that gave the Wingnuts a 3-2 lead.
The Sox scored three times in the top of the fourth to retake the lead. Pyles led off with a double to right-center, advanced to third on Gerardo Verastegui's sacrifice bunt, and scored on a line drive single to left from Harrison Kain. Garrett Rau doubled Kain to third, while Adam Buschini walked to load the bases. Wingnuts' starter Derek Blacksher retired Tim Alberts on a popout to second before Abeita lined a single to left to drive in Kain and Rau.
In the bottom of the fourth, Mark Wagner led off with a line drive single to center. Wagner moved to second after beating out a potential force at second on a Jessie Mier groundball, and went to third on a flyball to right from Carrillo. McDonald sliced the lead to 5-4 with a two-out, bunt single to the left side of the mound.
Wichita tied the game in the seventh. Khoury hit a one-out double down the right field line. Two batters later, John Rodriguez made it 5-5 on a groundball single up the middle.
