American Association Game Recaps

July 24, 2012 - American Association (AA) News Release

Wichita 6, Amarillo 5

With the score tied, 5-5, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Wingnuts CF Mike Conroy stepped to the plate with the go-ahead run in scoring position. Conroy fouled off three straight pitches - two would-be strike threes - before singling and bringing 3B Steve Carillo around to score and give Wichita a 6-5 walkoff win. Carillo - who scored twice in the contest - reached first on a dropped strike three to open the inning. Conroy went 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBI, three coming on a third-inning home run before his walkoff single in the ninth. The Sox answered the three-run blast in the next frame, plating three of their own to take a 5-3 advantage. From that point on, though, it was all Wichita.

Gary SouthShore 2, Sioux City 0

RailCats starting pitcher Will Krout could do no wrong Tuesday night, tossing a complete-game four-hitter against Sioux City and leading his club to a 2-0 victory. Krout struck out four Explorers batters in contrast to just one free pass, bringing his season strikeout-to-walk ratio to 34-9. With Krout locked in on the mound, Gary SouthShore needed little in the way of offense to pick up the victory. The RailCats got that little bit early on when 3B Brian Kolb singled in RF Mike Massaro from third base in the opening frame. The Explorers put just one man in scoring position the entire game. But just two pitches after Sioux City 2B Mike Murphy hit a two-out double in the third, Krout got CF Brandon Newton to hit an inning-ending groundout to put a stop to the short-lived threat. Murphey - the only Sioux City player with more than one base knock - tied Massaro for the game high in hits with two.

El Paso 2, Grand Prairie 0

Led by starting pitcher Reyes Dorado, the El Paso staff combined to throw a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in the Diablos' 2-0 victory over Grand Prairie. Dorado spent the first six innings on the mound, striking out three while allowing only two hits. AirHogs starter Raymond Cruz was equally impressive over the first four innings. But a leadoff home run from 1B Jonathan Cisneros in the Diablos' two-run fifth did all the damage needed to garner the win for El Paso. The blast was the fourth of the season for Cisneros, who went 1-for-4 on the night. Diablos RF Welington Dotel managed the game's only multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 and raising his season average to .395.

Quebec 6, Winnipeg 2

Capitales starting pitcher Karl Gelinas seemed almost human in the fourth inning Tuesday night, allowing two runs on two hits to Goldeyes batters. Outside of that frame, however, the 6-foot-4 righty was nearly unhittable and led his club to a 6-2 win over Winnipeg. In the end, Gelinas allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four. Gelinas' ERA sits at 2.39 on the year. The two-run Goldeyes third could only cut the existing Capitales 4-0 lead in half, as Quebec had plated four runs just an inning earlier. Capitales leadoff SS Jeff Helps scored the first of those runs, one of his two on the night. Helps went 3-for-5 to lead all players in hits.

Fargo-Moorhead 11, Sioux Falls 8

RedHawks DH Ryan Delgado hit a three-run blast in the first inning, bringing his club's lead to 5-0 and sending Fargo-Moorhead cruising to an 11-8 win over Sioux Falls. Delgado went 3-for-5 on the night, scoring twice and batting in six runs. The Pheasants pulled to within one run at 6-5 with a five-run frame of their own in the fifth. But Fargo-Moorhead answered with three in the bottom of the frame to keep their lead safe. Sioux Falls 3B Cesar Nicolas hit a homer of his own, a three-run shot in the eighth, to highlight a 2-for-3 night. But it wasn't enough to rally the Pheasants to a come-from-behind victory.

Kansas City 10, St. Paul 7

The T-Bones scored nine runs in their final three innings at the plate and turned a 6-1 deficit into a 10-7 victory over St. Paul. Kansas City 1B Hunter Mense got the run started with a solo home run in the bottom of the T-Bones' one-run sixth inning. Kansas City the pushed three more across in the seventh. Then five in the eighth. All the while T-Bones pitching allowed only three hits in the final three frames to secure the win. Kansas City reliever Sean Toler threw a perfect eighth inning, striking out all three Saints batters he saw to earn the win. At the plate for the Saints, LF Willie Cabrera batted in four runs and scored one of his own as one of three St. Paul batters with multiple hits. But Cabrera and the rest of the Saints couldn't answer the late rally from the T-Bones, who had six multi-hit performers of their own.

Laredo 16, Lincoln 6

Lemurs LF Palmer Karr Jr. fell a triple shy of the cycle Tuesday night, hitting his seventh homer of the year to pace Laredo in the club's 16-6 victory over Lincoln. Karr Jr. batted in six runs and scored three times. The Lemurs trailed, 2-1, in the middle of the third. But eight runs over the next two frames put the home club on top for good. Karr Jr.'s three times crossing home plate were outdone only by Laredo leadoff 3B Jimmy Mojica. Mojica scored four runs on the night, going 2-for-4 while walking twice. Saltdogs leadoff CF Sean M. Smith hit his first four-bagger of the year, a third-inning shot that gave his club its short-lived one-run lead.
