Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums made a fierce rally but came up short in an 8-5 loss to the Central Division leading Windy City Thunderbolts at Wuerfel Park on Wednesday night in the second game of a four game series.
The Thunderbolts were able to get on the scoreboard first for the second straight night. Windy City used three first inning walks by Beach Bums spot starter Phil Tognetti, including one with the bases loaded, to grab the 1-0 lead. The Thunderbolts made it a 2-0 lead with a solo homer by Phil Hawke in the third and tacked on another run in the fourth to open a 3-0 advantage. Tognetti worked five innings and allowed three runs to go with five walks and three strikeouts in the spot start but took the loss.
In the sixth inning, Bryan Rembisz made his pro debut for the Beach Bums, and allowed a two single two-RBI single to Wes Long as the Thunderbolts opened a 5-0 lead. Derek Bell also made his pro debut, throwing two scoreless innings.
The Beach Bums rally began in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Windy City bullpen. Isaac Hess earned the win in his spot start for Windy City following a five-inning effort. Lance Koenig, who saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end in the game, drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. After back-to-back strikeouts, Zack Kalter doubled down the left field line to score Koenig and get the Beach Bums on the board.
In the eighth inning with one away and Jeff Brown at first, Brad Vericker singled to put runners at first and second. Curtis Ledbetter followed with an RBI double down the left field line to score Brown and make it a 5-2 deficit. Following another out, Jeff Vincent singled to right center on the first pitch to plate two and bring the Beach Bums within a run.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Thunderbolts were able to score three unearned runs following two errors and opened up a four-run edge once more at 8-4. The Beach Bums plated a run in the bottom of the ninth off of Windy City closer Matt Petty to make the margin 8-5 as Zack Kalter reached on an error, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Jeff Brown.
Jeff Brown and Zack Kalter each had two hits for the Beach Bums. Kalter was chosen as the Player of the Game, finishing 2-for-4 with a run, and an RBI.
The series will continue tomorrow night at Wuerfel Park in a 7:05 pm contest. The Beach Bums will place RHP Robbie McClellan (3-1, 4.55) on the hill against Windy City's RHP Billy Phillips (1-2, 4.11). The evening will be Trailhead Magazine Adventure Quencher Night as the first 1,000 fans will receive a logo water bottle. Tim Calderwood will broadcast the game on The Fox FM beginning with the Beach Bums On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
