Win Streak Snapped as Sox Sweep Twin Bill

SALEM, VA - Winston-Salem's nine-game win streak ended on Sunday as Salem quieted the Dash's bats to sweep a doubleheader at Lewis-Gale Field. The Red Sox won game one 3-0 as Mark Holliman threw a two-hit shutout to out-duel Nate Jones. Salem battered the Dash with eight extra-base hits in the second game to win 8-1.
Winston-Salem (37-31, 80-50) remains one win or one Kinston loss away from clinching the second half Southern Division title. Any celebration will have to wait until the final day of the regular season when the Dash and Sox finish their series on Monday.
In game one, Salem (31-36, 73-64) got single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings against Nate Jones for the only tallies of the contest. Will Middlebrooks hit a sacrifice fly in the first, while Tim Federowicz and Oscar Tejeda drove in runs with base hits in the third and fifth, respectively.
Three runs were enough for Holliman (4-0), who yielded only two hits over seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven en route to the win, the second shutout and third complete game of his career.
Jones (11-6) also pitched well, but did not receive any offensive support. He suffered the loss despite also throwing a complete game, the second of his career. Jones had a quality start, giving up three runs on six hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.
The game finished in one hour, 28 minutes, making it the shortest game for both teams all season. Winston's previous shortest game came just one day earlier, when the Dash beat the Red Sox in one hour, 40 minutes on Saturday.
Salem hit Dash pitching hard in game two. After a scoreless first inning, Jake Rasner gave up a leadoff triple to Drew Hedman in the second. Ronald Bermudez drove him in with a double. Later in the inning, Mitch Dening hit a two-run double to make it 3-0 Sox.
Winston-Salem grabbed a run in the top of the third with a Jose Martinez RBI single, but Salem got that run right back in the bottom of the inning on another RBI double from Bermudez.
Ryan Dent hit a solo home run in the fourth to push the Red Sox ahead 5-1. Salem scored two more times in the fifth and another in the sixth to roll to the win. Of the Red Sox' nine hits, the first eight went for extra bases.
Rasner (1-2) suffered the defeat after giving up five runs on six hits in five innings. Reliever Pat Ryan (2-1) finished the game with three scoreless innings for the win.
The Dash finishes its regular season on Monday with a 12 noon game against the Red Sox. LHP Joe Serafin (3-4, 5.94) starts against RHP Miguel Gonzalez (6-3, 3.99). The audio broadcast starts at 11:45 a.m. on www.wsdash.com .
The playoffs begin on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark, as Winston-Salem will host the Kinston Indians in a five-game series. Games one and two will be in Winston with the next two at Grainger Stadium. If necessary, game five will be played on Sunday at the site of the second half champion.
