Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- With the season drawing to a close, the Pelicans are looking to end the season on a high note in their final series of the 2010 campaign. On a Sunday night at BB&T Coastal Field, Pelicans starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer did his part to send the 4,556 fans at the ballpark home happy, nearly tossing his second consecutive complete game in a dominating pitching performance as the southpaw led the Pelicans to an 8-3 victory over Lynchburg.
The Pelicans got on the board first against Lynchburg starter Pedro Villarreal, who labored through his first inning of work. Phil Gosselin led things off with a single, coming around to score on a Mike Jones RBI base knock to give the Pelicans an early 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Sammy Sime's run-scoring groundout gave Oberholtzer a 2-0 cushion.
With Oberholtzer dealing on the mound, the Pelicans offense sprang to life in the bottom of the fourth, plating five runs to blow the game wide open. The first four men to come to the plate reached base and eventually all four would come around to score. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Samuel Sime who cranked a two-run shot off Villarreal (0-3), his seventh of the season to make it 4-0. With two down in the frame, Jordan Kreke laced a double to left-center to score two more and Gerry Rodriguez ended the frame with another RBI single to make it 7-0 Myrtle Beach.
But this night was all about Oberholtzer (6-6). Coming off his last outing in Wilmington where the left-hander came within one out of a complete game victory against the Blue Rocks, it would be difficult for Oberholtzer to improve upon that outstanding start. But that's just what Oberholtzer did.
In one of the most dominating performances in the Carolina League this season, Oberholtzer was masterful in navigating through the Hillcats lineup, facing just three batters over the minimum while taking a shutout into the ninth inning. Oberholtzer, however, ran out of steam in the ninth inning, allowing three consecutive baserunners with one out in the frame before being lifted for reliever Chad Rodgers.
Unfortunately for Oberholtzer, a pair of errors led to three runs scoring in the inning, all three tallies going on Oberholtzer's ledger, and all of the unearned variety. Until the ninth, Oberholtzer did not allow a HIllcat runner to reach second base while whiffing a career high 12 in his 8 1/3 innings of work. With Rodgers inducing a ground ball for the final out, Oberholtzer could breathe a sigh of relief as the lefty picked up his sixth win of the season.
The southpaw ended the season on a high note, going 2-0 in his last two starts while allowing just one earned run, striking out 21, and not walking a batter.
These two teams will be back tomorrow for the season finale from BB&T Coastal Field with first pitch set for 6:05 ET. Be sure to get your tickets now as all kids 12 and under through the gates will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, chips, and soda. It will also be Fan Appreciation night at the ballpark where the Pelicans will celebrate you, the fans, with games and gifts all evening long. After the game, the Pelicans will hold the final fireworks extravaganza of the season as the bombs bursting in air will signal the end of yet another regular season of baseball here on the Grand Strand.
