Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Adam Frost hit a pair of two-run triples and the Wilmington Blue Rocks (68-69, 36-31) rallied for a 7-6 defeat of the Frederick Keys (71-68, 30-39) at Frawley Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Rocks' league-leading 26th one-run win has secured a series triumph for the Blue Crew against the playoff-bound Frederick Keys on both the holiday weekend set and the season. With one game left on its 2010 campaign, Wilmington needs a Labor Day victory to post a .500 record.
Frederick led 1-0 on Ronnie Welty's team-leading 18th home run of the season in the opening inning. The Rocks responded though when Rene Oriental's sacrifice fly combined with Frost's first two-run triple to forge a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
A Brian Ward run-scoring single and a run-producing throwing error by catcher Joey Lewis allowed Frederick to tie things up at 3-all in the sixth, but again, the Blue Rocks answered the call.
In the bottom half of the same frame, all nine men came to the plate to assemble a four-run response. Frost tripled in a pair of scores to end the deadlock, while Patrick Norris doubled in the third run and scored the fourth when he darted home on a wild pitch.
Frederick starter Kenny Moreland (2-3) suffered a rough line. The former Division III star at Christopher Newport allowed all seven runs on eight hits, three walks and a hit batter over five innings plus four batters.
Alas, Wilmington's Tim Melville left in line for the win, but settled for a no-decision. Reliever Brendan Lafferty, who has been unhittable since early July, posted a rare subpar outing. He allowed two inherited runners to cross against Melville's line and gave up three scores of his own on four hits and a walk over 1.2 innings. Lafferty (4-1) also recorded the victory.
Frederick made things interesting when it banged out those three runs against Lafferty in the seventh, but would get no closer on the day. Ryan Dennick faced the minimum in a scoreless and hitless eighth before Manauris Baez secured his fourth save in as many tries with a perfect ninth, striking out Billy Rowell to end it.
The Blue Rocks final game of 2010 will see two-time first-rounder Aaron Crow (2-2, 4.81) hurl for Wilmington against former Newark H.S. star Zach Clark (2-3, 5.48). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. on fan appreciation day.
